Atalanta and Hippomenes
Atalanta and Hippomenes
Atalanta and Hippomenes by ADDICT
Description
Description
Another submission for the mythology contest. This time it's an illustration of the race between Atalanta and Hippomenes (aka Melanoin). Hippomenes flings over his shoulder the second one of Aphrodite's three golden apples.
Atalanta, was a young woman and a fierce huntress raised by a she-bear that Artemis sent.. later on, she was raised by a hunter.
Atalanta refused to marry, except anyone who was swift enough to beat her in a foot-race. She outran her suitors, all but Hippomenes, who defeated her by cunning, not speed. Hippomenes knew that he could not win a fair race with Atalanta, so he asked Aphrodite for help. She gave him three golden apples and told him to drop them one at a time to distract Atalanta. After each of the first two apples, Atalanta was able to recover the lead, but when she stopped for the third, Hippomenes won the race. It took all three apples and all of his speed, but Hippomenes was finally successful, winning the race and Atalanta's hand.
Although the coloring could have been better ( DD: ), I love the background. It's one of the few backgrounds I've drawn that have "depth". I also drew running poses. That's a first for me.
I'm not sure if the perspective/height between the guy and girl is ok, or if the running poses don't look weird.
General critique is fine, but if anyone could give critique on perspective, action poses, and how to put more depth in backgrounds by coloring, that would be really great.

I love it, and I'm not at all even decent at perspective and backgrounds, so I won't venture into constructive criticism since it looks great to me. I especially love her ditzy expression, it makes me laugh, like, 'ooooh! shiny apple!' Also, the folds in his robe at the bottom are great too, i like the shape they make.
