My Dragons are mostly inspired by the art from the Anne McCaffrey covers from The Dragon Riders of Pern, especially how their wings join to their bodies... Around the period of time I was drawing this particular dragon, I was influenced by some Asian paintings I had seen of dragons, which depicted their faces looking more like a dog's. This picture is from about a decade ago... If you have ever seen a swimming reptile, they hug their legs against their bodies like this one does as he swims through the air.
Someone said that my dragon reminds them of Dragonair from Pokemon... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dragonair_(Pok%C3%A9mon) I guess I can sort of see a resemblance... Perhaps a distant cousin, twice removed????

Thank you Rolla! You were a good contenda in the last contest we were in together... You got skillz. I am working on one more entry... I was inspired by the really nice textures that everyone did on their dragons' scales, so my new entry won't be all smooth scales like my old one. And it's sort of posing... I really like the ones you entered! You did Young Peacock Dragon and Twin Dragons right?

Dragonriders of Pern!
. . . You are amazing. :)
I like the facial structure, and the, uh, things (for lack of a better word) coming out of the part surrounding the eyes.
(Haha, I know this comment is pretty shallow - I prefer leaving deeper comments about the entire gallery on the profile page, which is what I'll do once I'm done browsing.)

Thanks much! I kind of think of those as sensory organs like whiskers or antennae, some sort of way that they might taste the air or use to communicate over long distances, like the way a snake tastes the air with its tongue or like whales use song. They would be tougher than hair or fingernails, but more flexible than horns or antlers. They can spread out like in different directions, like ears. I haven't come up with a name for them yet, so if you can think of a name, I'm all ears.
