He is! He's actually the closest thing in the books to movie!Toothless (that tiny dragon flying in this picture is the actual book!Toothless). The Windwalker is one of my favorites.
I highly recommend the books, as long as you're willing to have an open mind and accept that they're very different from the movie. The movie is more... commercial- it works with tried-and-true movie themes (to STUNNING effect). The books are certainly less traditional in style... but I think that's where their power lies.
Talking dragons, no love interest, and no dragon riding by Hiccup until book 5.
Also my favorite pack of novels ever (and I'm a bit of a classical lit buff.)

The Windwalker was a traumatized dragon that had been tortured working in a mine. Hiccup, being the chief's son (and thus getting first pick of the riding dragons), chose him, even though he had a messed-up leg.
He's actually probably one of the inspirations for movie-Toothless. The books never have him doing what he does in the movie, but he does seem to cooperate with wounded/disadvantaged dragons quite a lot.
Hahaha, it's too fun to oversimplify everything. XD
