Before it Hits

" Everything was black, and his body felt far too heavy to move. For a few moments, he was sure that he was dead, that he had faded away. He could remember nothing, knew nothing, so surely everything about him had been erased by now.

But then he heard a soft, constant sound, all around him. A word came back to him, and he whispered the name hoarsely. “Rain…” It was the sound of rainfall on a roof. That meant he had to be somewhere. In spite of his stubborn insistences to himself that it was ok to fade away, that he was supposed to fade, this realization brought honest relief. For the moment, at least, he still was.
