I believe it was part of the deal between Nickelodeon and Jim Davis.

Though as I wrote on that blog, garfield.com shouldn't be mourned that much, especially since the Garfield Wiki has a better database. Compare the pages about Jon Arbuckle:

- on garfield.com https://web.archive.org/web/20190806183353/https://garfield.com/characters/jon-q-arbuckle - skimpy data, written in 2005 and never updated;

- on the Garfield Wiki https://garfield.fandom.com/wiki/Jon_Arbuckle - regularly updated by fans.

Have to admit, the fans did a better job than PAWS Inc.
