Kosita: Snow Days
I woke up with a start. Something was different. My ears strained to hear the slightest of noises, my nose twitched for the slightest scent. It was the middle of the night; there was no sound, there was no noise. I looked around, my eyes glowing. I got up quietly and snuck to the window overlooking the front of the mansion. A full moon hovered above in the sky. The ground sparkled with a million flecks of snow. There was more snow falling down, blanketing the trees and bushes surrounding the clearing. I wore a wolfish grin and shifted forms.
I sprinted down the stairs, the pads of my feet barely making a sound in the still air. “Arrrrooooowww!!! C’mon, everyone! Time to get up!” I leapt over the last 7 steps and raced for the door. Throwing it open, I breathed in the magnificent mountain air. There’s nothing like it, and each year the new snows bring this wondrous gift to all the creatures of the mountains. I lunged forward, making the first paw prints on the new-fallen snow. Silver burst out of the doorway, growling up a storm. I guess he thought we were being attacked or something. I kicked snow in his face and he yipped in surprise before chasing after me. While trying to avoid the swift and cunning Silver, I noticed Kai standing over Skylar at the doorway. The little pup looked up at her mother then out at the snow, her eyes full of question. Kai smiled, her eyes sparkling in the moon’s glow.
“Snow!!” That was Kaidok…it was about time, too. He bounded out of the house, still with a slight limp, but he seemed to be ignoring it. Skylar ran forward at about the same time and into the snow tumbled the cripple and the pup. Kai rushed to them, nuzzling Skylar and flicking snow playfully at Kaidok. Silver leapt at the group, his tongue hanging out of his mouth with pleasure. I laughed.
Here was a happy existence...Brought together by misfortune and death. There was a sense of family, but I couldn’t help but feel a sense of dread.
