Challenge complete! AHA!
Last time I drew this guy, I tried to explain a little bit about who he was and what he was from. But I think I may have done a terrible job.
So now, thanks to the magic of links, I offer this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5iUMWy4hqAg
Seen it? Okay good. Isn't it awesome? ^_^ Anyway, I based this design from that show, and added a bit of a pelt and some other stuff. It was supposed to be a ceremonial garb, but I figure, a monkey's gonna have different ideas of looking spiffy to people.
He's in heaven, eating some magic peaches...

XD I only really know the basics of the story, so I may be wrong on some things, but he's a monkey spirit (who can do magic) who started fighting with the gods in heaven and as punishment was made to walk from China to India with a buddhist priest and a pig spirit to get some holy scriptures.
Uh...the story changes in every version I read so I'm a bit confused about what the actual story is. I still haven't read the original novel. =(

I think it goes along the line of
the Monkey King was born from stone infused with all the elements and powers of heaven and earth.
He became the king of the monkeys on Hua-Guo Mountain, or flower-fruit mountain, and they lived... UH I think it was behind a waterfall. 8D;
Then he... He sought a really powerful weapon (this part might come before/after the next section, I forget), but nothing the monkeys had satisfied them. (He broke their strongest with a flick of the fingers, etc) So he went down under the sea to meet with the dragon of... some cardinal direction. 8D; He ended up setting his eyes on the JingGuBang, the stick he's got (red with yellow tips) which could grow to whatever size he wanted, and could be made small enough to tuck into his ear. The rod was a supplement to the sea floor, though, and was a treasure of the dragon's. When he proved that he could take it, the sea king's palace was damaged, and he tried to get it back, but WuKong outsmarted him and ran away with the stick.
He later was noticed for his power in Heaven, who tried to recruit him and thus keep him out of trouble. He was given the task of being stablehand to the heavenly horses, and lied to that it was a really high position. When he found out it was the lowest position in heaven, he got real pissed and set all the horses free and tramped around... something like that.
He also stole into the sacred garden of the peaches and ate/massacred the peaches of longevity, pretty much guaranteeing his invincibility and immortality.
I think he finally lost to... some variation of Buddha or something. He boasted he could outrun anyone, and so he challenged the Buddha. He's said that one flip lands him 1,800 li (some unit akin to miles in US, so pretty far) away, but he couldn't outrun the Buddha. (He thought he did and found five "mountains," which he then peed under, only to later discover it was the Buddha's palm he was still in)
and so he was caged under a mountain for a couple thousand years. 8D;
Sanzo eventually rescued him and had him protect him while he journeyed west. The diadem around his head was a way for Sanzo to keep him under control, because when he recited a mantra, WuKong's diadem would squeeze his head real tight, and he couldn't ever get it off, so it was a way to get him to obey. :)
...UM YEAH.
SORRY ABOUT ALL THAT. 8D;

Have you watched the 1961 animation, "Havoc In Heaven"? I found that that animation pretty much sums it all up. :) I remember watching it as a child... god I loved that movie.
I looked around on YouTube, but the only section I found subbed was the first five min... another person had uploaded all of it, but only with chinese subs. D:
I could translate most of it, I figure, but... I don't know how to sub. D; Damn, otherwise, I'd be SO over it~ *grumblegrumble*

O_O No. No I haven't. T_T I haven't heard of it before. Now I want to see it very very badly. Youtube here I come...
I just got sent a link for an animated show called 'Monkey Magic' 8D That looked sweet. I hadn't heard of that either. I seem to be really in the dark on the amount of Journey to the West stuff that's been done. I remember going into Chinatown and the video store there had a poster for a movie. It looked pretty great. The makeup and all that. But they didn't have a copy. And then they closed down. T_T

No but seriously
if you want me to send you a text of the dialogue (there's not that much)
I WILL SO DO IT.
8D
And be HAPPY TO.
The Journey to the West is REALLY REALLY REALLY long. 8D; I don't remember half the stories too well... but it was an ongoing saga. Havoc in Heaven is an awesome animation, and pretty much sets it all down for ya. Highly recommend it. (And since you know the plotline, it shouldn't be hard to figure out what's happening most times. ;D )
You're more informed on this stuff than any other english-speaking person I know. Rock on.

8D You would do that?!?!?!
8D <3 <3 <3 That would be awesome.
I've been looking for the original novel for years, in english, and I read that it's pretty huge. O_O 8D That's fantastic. But then I've also read that no-one's translated the whole thing yet. There's an abridged english version with a selection of chapters...that's all. =( I can't even find that one. =(

I heard chinese-english translations suck. D:
And reading "To Live" in class, I have to admit...
It's true.
Chinese and English are just so pivotally different. It's really, really hard to translate things from one language to another... and I've noticed that some REALLY really eloquent lines in Chinese become "I took a walk" in English. D:
Seriously though, Chinese language is REALLY dense. The type of poetry we have is either 5-words or 7-words, in line sets of four. Longer ones go on, but all either 5 or 7 characters, and trust me, in those 5 characters, there can be a whole story... so... translating between the two is really rough. :(
And, oh, YEAHHHHHHHHH~
(I'll admit, I kinda just wanted an excuse to watch Havoc in Heaven all over again, LOL)
HERE I GO. ;D I'll give ya the doc real soon; promise it'll be done by tonight. ;D
I heard there's not too much dialogue anyway though, soooo~ : )

XD Well I was glad when you suggested I try Sun WuKong in ceremonial clothing. That was an excuse for me to draw him again...and I'd been looking for one.
I knew someone from China and she would often tell me about the differences between Chinese and English. Mostly it went something like "Man, english was so easy to learn...but I'm still trying to learn chinese. D:" XD And she'd say it with such frustration, I quickly got the idea there was a lot of difference between the two. And I love me some Hong Kong movies, so she'd point out how incorrect the subtitles or dubbing was. A lot of the time...VERY incorrect. O_O
