John Carter of Mars

John Carter is the hero of a series pulp stories written by Edgar Rice Burroughs (who also wrote Tarzan and a number of other characters).

Carter is a veteran from the American civil war that gets transported to Mars through astral projection as he lies apparently dying in a cave. At Mars he gets involved in great wars between the different species living on Mars (or Barsoom as the name is on Mars).

Carter becomes an ally to Tars Tarkas, chief of the four armed green Martians. He also meets Dejah Thoris, princess of the city of Helium, whom he later married. Due to the lower gravity of Mars, John Carter, comparatively have the power to make great jumps which gives him sort of a super power.
