Description
The Spirit was an American newspaper comic, by the legendary comic creator Will Eisner (1917-2005).
It run as daily's between 1941-1944, and as a Sunday special insert of usually 7 pages.
During the 1960:s and 70:s Eisner created a few new stories with the Spirit.
There is also later comic book adaptions by other creators.
The Spirit is the criminologist Denny Colt who is presumed to have been killed after falling into suspended animation, but who continues fighting crime as the masked crime fighter the Spirit, only concealing his true identity with a small domino style mask. His base of operation is a secret, rather spacey, dwelling under Denny Colt's headstone in the Wildwood Cementry.
The comic was a mixture of crime drama, noir and mystery with a good helping of slapstick, horror and even romance.
There was a good number of femme fatales, beautiful but dangerous women, crossing the Spirits path, such as Silk Satin, P'Gell, and Plaster o' Paris.
The Spirit's archenemy the Octopus is a criminal mastermind whose true face never is revealed. Often we only get to see his gloved hands. In the 2008 movie adaption the Octopus' face however was revealed, (which I personally think was a mistake, though I in general enjoyed the movie more than most critics did - it flopped).
The Spirit gets hit in the head a lot (and generally beaten up) but always make a strong comeback.
