Original Design of Sparks

A female fox.

Yep, Sparks was originally a young female fox known as Lightnia (Light- knee- uh), known to use special gloves (that are not on at the moment) to cause static electricity so intense that it was visible as a bolt of electricity and could direct it in any direction where the cooped up energy would be released at whatever she aimed at.

See, this is basically the timeline.

Katrina -Original version of Sparks, but kept as a different character- > Lightnia -Female fox armed with electrical attacks- -> Sparks -Female hedgehog, the 'daughter' of Metal Sonic.- -> Sparks -Male hedgehog - 'Son of Metal Sonic' - -> *Present Day* Sparks - Hermaphrodite hedgehog, but kept the title as 'Son of Metal Sonic' -

It was utterly hilarious when Sparks was female though. XD Metal's reaction was priceless in a roleplay once...well, Sparks was a happy, perky female...and since she wore no clothes....

Metal: Fine....wait...*blinks and looks down slightly at her chest* Why are you not wearing a shirt....?
Sparks: Because Eggman says I don't have to, so there. :P
Metal: -mutters- Damn that perverted fat man.

It was just simple things like that that caused me to create the Metal Sonic x Sparks pairing...first it was a normal straight pairing...then Sparks became a male. Now, he looked a lot more like Sonic, except for his green markings and gold chest...I couldn't decide which version of him was better, so I decided 'hey, why not make him both?! >D Whoo! '
