CoS: 'Link'

When he was eight years of age, he was found in Hyrule by Princess Zelda, abandoned on the streets. He suffered from amnesia and was a mute. Though over the years he gradually regained his ability to talk, he could never remember much about his past beyond the memory of a someone or something killing a man he believed to be his father. Unable to remember his own name, Zelda began to call him Link. The two were very close over the course of the years until the beginning of the story when an unknown force turns them into enemies for the course of the first story, Dark Triforce.

By being pulled through the time-space continuum without provocation can result in a loss of memories and, sometimes, strength. A character named Misa says something along those lines, claiming that this is what caused memory loss for 'Link' as well as a few other characters in the series. Not until 'Link' witnesses various occurrences from his past at a later point in the series does he regain his memories.

(Note: The style of clothing he wears is not Hylian but is actually from a kingdom in my stories called Tsynia. It's not explained where he obtained the clothing until a later point in the series.)
