Original image stats: 2000x2000 pixels, 10 layers, 4 Megs. Took a little over an hour to do (did it just to keep me from being entirely frustrated with a larger project).

Anyway, if there's a grey/black/non-transparent background, it's probably because you're using IE. It is supposed to be transparent... I just hate how transparent gifs turn out. Mmmm... lovely, lovely pngs...
