Description
This drawing began as a sketch of the head, but I liked it so much I decided to finish the rest of him too.
An alternate form of dragon-horse hybrid, the flatland kirin is a hardy species with beautiful fur, keen slitted eyes, and bony plates across its broad shoulders. The plates help this species of kirin adjust its body temperature, and water is stored around the shoulder muscles, not unlike a camel's hump. Its toes have not fused into a single hoof; the dewclaws on the forelegs have actually developed into a large sickle-shaped weapon, mainly used in defense, while the remaining three toes have thick, dark pads on the underside. Flatland kirin can eat even the toughest plant matter, but have been known to hunt small prey when their favored food sources are depleted. Kirin are fairly intelligent, and sometimes bond with humans, making prized mounts and companions for those who treat them kindly.
These kirin have no need of camouflage; just as well, for their part-dragon lineage often endows them with skin, fur, and scalelike growths of vibrant colors. It is not unusual to see red, yellow, or even green hues alongside browns, grays, and whites.
