An anthro RP over on the RP board in the forums caught my eye, as it was actually interesting, unlike 98% of the RPs that go on there. I am toying with the idea of joining, and while I was thinking about it, I decided to doodle up a character. Being the unimaginative person that I am, I fell back on Flint the weasel; my very first anthro character, my very first RP character, and my first foray into the online world (Redwall MUCK, way back in 6th grade).

I was a kid back then. I didn't know anything, and I'm sure I was a lousy RPer. I'm still amused to realize that my first character was a guy - all of my subsequent furry characters have been female.

I remember that when I first started out, Flint wore a cloak and weilded a sword. After a while, I noticed that most other characters were clothed, so I added clothes. People would also describe their characters as having 'headfur', which confused me terribly because I could not conceive of a weasel or a mouse or a badger with hair. To this day, I am still skeptical of furries with headfur. If you look back at the picture of Cyan in my gallery, I think I mention that she's the first anthro that I've drawn with headfur, and that's because it was a request.

Anywho, back to the picture at hand. I decided to really reach back to my roots, and draw Flint without any clothing at all. I did leave the sword, because he has always been a warrior, and I added a baldric so that he doesn't have to carry the sword around in his handpaw all the time. I bent the knees backward, which is something that I've never done with my anthros. I figured that without clothing, I may as well make him as animal-like as possible. This was supposed to be a 10-minute doodle, but I suddenly learned that I can actually draw with my tablet (yeah, I'm so lame - I tried when I first got the tablet, drew a horrible picture, and then never tried again - guess my control improved), so it turned into an hour-long project. Sleep? What's that? :P

Anyway, I think this came out quite nicely, and it might lead me to drawing more on the computer. I'm really quite excited by this. Heh, if you've read all of this blather, I'm quite impressed! Still, I must make one more rant.

How is it that in the Furries category listings, there are options for insects and cows, but none for any type of mustelids?! I am completely insulted, as weasels have always been my preferred anthro species, with ferrets running second. But that might be because I read too much Redwall as a kid...

AspenI HATE even the concept of headfur. I mean, what's with that? I feel ill at the thought of it. Brian Jacques never mentioned it. Why should anyone else?

StratadrakeInteresting... I agree with you about the issue of "headfur" (aka, a "head of hair"), it just doesn't work. A mane, I can understand, but a very obvious 'hairdo' is simply out of order.

As for the issue of clothes, if you've seen the anthros I've done, all but one of them are comlpetely naked (read: non-clothed). If their body is covered in a thick pelt of fur (or feathers, or scales), why would they need to cover up in robes? They wouldn't.

BTW, you know the whole "reverse-knee" thing, that what appears to be the the backwards 'knee' is actually the heel of the foot? Essentially, animal legs are structured with shorter calves and a long foot (for which the creature stands on tiptoe).

And for a word about the categorization system. The reason why we don't have certain subcats is usually because of demand. To my knowledge, ferret- type anthros are pretty rare -- cat, dog/wolf, and fox are the most popular (Furries/Cats alone has over 1,500 pics!) .

Yup, it would be nice to add a new category for each type of furry... but that'll depend on the demand for it.

But anyway, since I don't want to talk all night about stuff that's not about this picture, what can I say about this guy specifically? Hmm... I like the heavy animal influence. I mean, I hate seeing furries with a heavy emphasis on the human-like physiology, I wish there was an easy way to split the Furries category between "anime" and "animal", but there isn't.

Wait, I'm rambling again. The legs are pretty much awesome (though the horizontal positioning of the 'calf' sections looks a bit uncomfortable). Hmm... I'm also thinking that the ferret's tail should be a little longer and bushier.

But overall a nice job. I may be good at colored pencil but I have no patience for learning CG. If I scribbled on the PC for an hour, I have no idea what would come out.

Rindi_chanHeh, I was a total Redwall nut back in elementary and middle school. ^_^ I loved the early books, but after The Bellmaker, they just got worse and worse, and I eventually stopped reading them. I still have about five of them on my bookshelf at home, though... Salamandastron was the best, because the main villains were weasels. :D

dragons_healing_bloodOops, sorry, I forgot to comment on the picture. I for one really love it ,and think it is very orginal, I think it's very creative that you made him clothless(and also without headfur).Bye.

dragons_healing_bloodI don't get it, are you for or against Redwall? I for one really love the series(and if you have a different opinion, that's okay). Bye.
