Did you notice the stereotypical depicting of females in anime? Don`t get me wrong, I'm not some feminist freak and I do enjoy thous animes anyway, but this just makes me sick to my ill prone belly.
If there is a specific female character, she is usually: the hero`s girlfriend, the hero`s soon-to-be girlfriend (no matter if she likes him or not, she WILL become his girlfriend no matter what), the heroes secret admirer / ex-girlfriend (who will never get together with the hero, because he ALWAYS ends up with the female lead), the useless fighter (gets kickassed by everyone every time or at-least never gets to defeat a main villain) or a member of the supporting cast
IF a female actually makes it to the post of main character, she is usually:
a) a magic girl
b) fan-service
c) both above
thank the higher powers for stuff like Ghost in the Shell and Revolutionary Girl Utena, where the female characters (although still containing some fan-service) can be taken serious
this of-course is more or less all about action/sci-fi/fantasy anime (which is the only sort I watch), other genres may have a better depiction of females
I`m only writing about what I know
