Description
Here's a traditional Japanese tanuki. He's got a sando-gasa (sedge hat) hanging from his neck. In one hand, he's holding a hisago (gourd bottle) and in the other he's got an inrou (merchant book). What most people notice the first time that they see a tanuki statue (they're all over Japan, usually in store windows) is the tanuki's gigantic balls... yes, you read that right and your seeing it right.... the large testicles are symbol of verility/fertility. The sando-gasa means safe traveling, the hisago because tanuki love Japanese sake, and the empty merchant book means that he has wasted all his money on wine and women. Please don't be offended by this; it's a real part of Japanese culture.
