I did this in illustrator 9.0 using both the gradient mesh tool and normal gradients for an advanced assignment in computer illustration which took 2 months to finish.

Really cool! :D It could be bit smaller though, since I have no resizing on at the moment, and even if I would, resizing makes it look worse... :D Awesome job anyway!
