And finally, the fourth winner from my "evolution" contest back in September was HeavenlyKunoichi, and she requested a phoenix, hopefully something with the symbolism of virtues and breaking chains.

And so this is my phoenix, or as I might call it, "experiments in improvisation ## (insert random number here)". I'm not much for doing symbolism, and ironically, not a single thing on this drawing came out exactly like I originally planned it to; most of the decisions I made, I made them on the fly.

Anyway, what you see here is a phoenix breaking itself free after an explosive volcanic eruption (background), a disaster which would eradicate just about anything -- that is, except for the miraculous bird.

This also happens to be the last page on my current sketchbook. Time to get a new one!

RebusWow. I love the action in this picture, and that's a great colour scheme for the phoenix itself. I like the fiery edges on the wings.

EraRillianI'd have to say, next to the kitty nija thing, this is my fav. I LOVE the colors, and for some reason, the way he is breaking free just seems to be so moving...I dunno... Can't describe it but yeah-you get the point. The only thing that i'm not fond of, is the smoke in the background just seems to collected. I'd like to see it more whispy.
All around though, a very nice job and I LOVE the pose the bird is taking. It really adds a lot to this pick to have him reaching almost "longingly" toward the sky.
