Avian Pegasus (2001)

Description
Description
While the basic description of a traditional pegasus is "horse with wings", I'll freely admit that I hate that tradition. The contrast of feathered wings and a lightly furred hide is so stark, so... unnatural. In my mind, if you can dismember the wings and rightly call the remainder a horse, then it does not deserve to be called a "pegasus" in the first place!

Rants aside, that's where the inspiration for this pegasus came from. Like the gryphon I drew at about the same time in 2001, I mixed the avian and equine elements together so much that this isn't a mere "winged horse", it's a genuine, honest pegasus. You can't quite call it a horse, but neither can you quite call it a bird.
The Pegasus has a Greek background as being almost a "God." It was the Greeks who made it up, they named it, and they called it a Pegasus. it was awinged horse.I really like this creature, but I think it should not be called a pegasus. I shouldn't talk because I kind of do the same thing in my story but I still have the traditional pegasus "flying horse" going on. This is my like a hippogriff like everybody is saying. I'm not trying to bash you Strata, because I think you're a good artist, it's just that I find it rahter unfair for you to say that a horse with wings shouldn't be called a Pegasus. it's kind of like saying, a human with six fingers shouldn't be called a human. It's still a human, and the definition (i hope i spelled that right) of a Pegasus, is "the Greek God Pegasus, a flying horse." Not a birdie.

I agree this image will be better suited in the Hippogriff range rather than the pegasi. The tranditions are ment to be there for you, you shouldn't really change them. Pegasus may be just winged horses but take into consider what style of wings you can add onto them, you can have both dragonic and feathered. The same thing will go with the Unicorn, any animal with 1 horn on it's forehead (or lower jaw) can be considered a Unicorn. Today's living Unicorn is the Narwhal where as only the males have the horn they are natures unicorn of the present. Overall great job with the image I really like it.
