I never was all that happy with the first painting, and when I was told about the AOI's Images 36 competition, I saw it as an opportunity to improve the old painting.
I'm a lot happier with this version. It doesn't look as flat and dull as the first one. Mind you, I'll probably go back to it again in future and improve on it some more!
Here's a link to the old image, if you want to make comparisons: http://www.fanart-central.net/pic-804632.html

Gah, perspective! It gets me everytime! Really wish I had read this before sending off my entry. Ah well.
The house isn't underground, it's within a small grass hillock (I supposed I should have researched grass roots :P) Then again, I suppose it should have been a bit thicker. Live and learn.
Thanks muchly for giving me such a detailed critique :) I don't get many of them often!
I also forgot to hit the 'reply-to' option again. Fail!

I know. That's why I normally keep myself to myself.
That flippin' spool was probably the most annoying thing to draw in this. I do have books on perspective, but it looks like I need to keep practising :\ ah well. I was also so focused on redrawing the mice fur that I completely forgot about that kettle! Rassum frassum....
Despite all that, I'm still happy that I got this submitted before deadline :)

Oh yeah! I'm a member of the Association of Illustrators and they sent me notice about the Images 36 competition, which hosts the best of British contemporary illustration. Mines isn't the best, but I thought why the hell not? Might as well try to get myself known, you know? I did enter the competition back in college, and although my entries were exhibited, I didn't win anything :P My work was published into the entry book, though!
I was originally going to paint a scene from Phillip Pullman's Northern Lights, but then I realised that I couldn't trust myself to work diligently on it for the deadline, so I turned to improving this old piece.
