For the Anthro Limbo Contest. This took some time to design.

A little about the anatomy:
The arm isn't short, it is actually hidden beneath a fold of loose, stretchy skin. During flight, the falcon-anthro (falcanthro) can completly fold its arms into these flaps to reduce wind drag. There is a similar fold at the legs where the falcanthro can tuck his/her knees into their body to sit. This falcanthro is doing just that.
Falcanthros are capable of speech. They form words at the back of the mouth and throat where they can manipulate the skin. (It's where he looks like he's smiling) Since Falcanthros have limited facial expressions, they use their bodies, and especially, their hands to convey emotion. This one is holding his hand up in the Gesture of Teaching, hence the title.
I chose to loosely base this Falcanthro's coloring on the Peregrine Falcons'. I colored this on photoshop, but drew every feather manually beforehand. I'm proud of this picture!

FadeCan I copy the Anatomy? I'm in an RP and my character turns into a bald eagle type creature. I sort of imagined him ending up like this.

Stratadrakenever got around to commenting proper on this one, did I? Well then, let's fix that. I won't give it a second scoring, but for now I'll just describe how and why it scored well as it did.

But first, a short break for a (non)commercial advertisement. Check out the Contests subforum!

Okay then, now to comment and explain the contest score this received. It was the first feathery in the contest that I evaluated, so the second scoring will probably be a bit more specific.

Head: 4/5. Only a few nits kept it from perfect 5/5 territory. Love the overall shape and those eyes. The beak didn't seem to "feel" like a hawk/falcon type beak though....
Torso: 3/5. This is turning out to the the toughest criterion to rate. The legs/hips sorta bug me, but other than that, not bad.
Arms: 5/5. Detailed, reasonable thickness, and a plus for the talons.
Wings: 4/5. The dark blue obscures some of the detail, but great otherwise.
Legs: 4/5. Definitely look like a bird's legs here with some adjustments. The pose risks looking back-heavy with those wings, and the talons feel small at times.
Tail: 4/5. Can't tell if this is a fantail or swallowtail from this angle, and it seems like it'd be dragging. Great job otherwise.
Pelt: 4/5 for the detail, best detail being the wings.
Decor: 4/5 for the decorative touches on the face, hips, and wing stripes.
Other: 4/5 for the description
Technique: 4/5. Very solid.
TOTAL: 40/50, B

KFelidaeAw, wow!

Even though this is an amazing picture, I was drawn in a bit more by your explaination of the character. They sound like an exceptionally neat race, and I'd love to hear more about them.

As for the pic, you've got a great form for the critter, more bird than man, while still looking believable standing upright like that. The tail looks as if it might drag, though. The colouration is a nice touch. Blue and purple usually don't work, but they don't seem so noticeable here, and blend into the browns and tans very well.

A great job!
