Well, two thing inspired me to draw this:
1. The episode "CAMP KEEP A GOOD MAC DOWN"
2. A Hungarian nature hiker show from 1978 called "Másfélmillió lépés Magyarországon" (One and half million steps in Hungary).
The bikewheel on a haft which Mac holds in his hand was used in that show. It served to measure the covered distance by the number of the wheel's rotation.
