The Yugo 45 ,also known as Zastava Koral on several markets, was a subcompact car produced by the Zastava corporation in Kragujevac, Yugoslavia (presently in Serbia) between 1980 and 2008. The car had a new body style, but mechanically was the same of Fiat 127 and 128. The Yugo was (and still) popular in the former countries of Yugoslavia, where many of them are still in use, but it can be also familiar to Americans as well, thanks to the company's plan to get a slice from the U.S. market. There, with the aid of car entrepreneur Malcolm Bricklin, the company wanted to sell the car as a simple, low cost car on the market, so make Yugo to the company's own Ford Model T or VW Bug (as one of their billboard advertised). The factory even made a cabrio model from it especially to the U.S. market. However, the Yugo had many problems like weak economical engine and poor quality, so the particular success at the beginning was followed by the drop of sales. After 1991, it was also unable to import the cars to the U.S. because of the Balkanic wars of that time, so the Yugo's carrier in the overseas has ended.
Finally, here's a short story that reportedly was happened: a guy went home with the freshly bought Yugo, and when he wanted to get out from the car, the door has fallen down. He was staggeringly looking at the door when he spotted a strip of paper hanging out from it, and the following text could be read: "Kakva plata, takva vrata!", which means by large "As the salary is, so the door is!"

SaltwaterCool design.
The walls of the houses seem to be of the same great quality as the car!  LOL
Funny story, but not for the owners of Yugo cars!  :-)

WH2007Wow! So cool! It's another one of my favorites.
If I found one for sale in a good codition I would but it right away XD They were mported to Poland in 1980's (US version) and about 1998-1999 (restyled Koral and Cabrio). Practically nobody bought them.

I have heard another story of a TV Host who said he would buy one and would park it in front of the houses of people he hates :D

alitta2Thanks! I forgot to mention that after 2000, Yugo was only available in Sebia and Montenegro (at least, its facelifted version can be found only in these countries).

BTW, was that TV host Jeremy Clarkson? Somehow I could imagine these words from his mouth (as he's known of his dislike of Eastern-made cars)XD

WH2007It wasn't Clarkson, it was some guy popular in the 1980's, when Yugos vere imported. I can't remember his name but I've read about it somewhere (maybe on Jalopnik?).
