At least that fact is depicted well in movies, as it's almost impossible to survive a direct headshot, especially when it hits the brain from sideward.
I've heard about a guy, who accidentaly shot himself on head with a nailgun while working, but the nail hit the middle part of his head, so it hit the gap between the two sides of brain. Therefore he could survive, but the nail damaged some parts of his brain in spite of it, so he became mentally handicapped.
