It's an all too common mistake! But Shiva is a god not goddess, he is but one of three major deities in Indian Mythology the other two being Brahma (the creator), and Vishnu (the preserver), all three made up the "Triad" which held existence in balance... Indian deities are very fond of shape shifting, but Shiva is male...
