Your character is very nice, but like you said the background is just alittle over powering. I blame the red. It also reminds me a of photographer back when photograph started ...Margaret...Cameron I think. Her subjects would e placed against a dark background, and if they had dark hair or a black shawl on their head, the subjects faces tend to pop out more. If you were not going for that, may I suject you change the solid colour behind her, so you can see her hair more. You did very well with her hair.
