For those of you who know my manga that I have been posting in my gallery, I'm throwing it out! I'm starting over with what I believe is a manga with and even better plot (don't I always say that? Sheesh.) So this is my herione, Ryo Sayuri. I used Fruits basket volume one as a reference for her eyes. (I wonder if you can guess who's eyes they are?) I was going to put in a background, but I suck at them. Does anyone have any briliant ideas for backgrounds for simple character profile pictures like this? If you do, add them to your comment! Thanks! And don't forget to tell me what you think!
P.S. Do you guys think my skill level should be intermediate? I never regard myself very highly when it comes to this....I don't want to be conceited.

Sometimes, on a good portrait, you don't need a background... This one looks fine as it is to me: maybe just add a background colour. Perhaps in this one, because she has red in her brown hair and in the purple lining, you could go with a greenish/grey or greenish/brown backdrop? If you truly want the focus on your portrait subject, and the emotion in the face, don't worry about cluttering up the background. The only thing I can suggest, if you do decide to go with a background, is just use something that would look natural: perhaps you could just make the background more out-of-focus or with minor details like maybe a window, or in a bedroom - subject could be sitting on the bed... Or out on a park bench... But then you start pulling away from just the portrait only and start drawing full body poses...

I LOVE IT! O_O My mind just kind of went 'bleh' when I saw it. All the pretty colors ^^! Her hair is beautiful.... unlike my moptop. The eyes look lovely, and they do look like said eyes from fruits basket. I'm guessing Yuki or Rin right? Or Uotani, Hanajima!?
I'm not much for skill thingys.
If you wanted a backround try drawing a few bubbles, mabey in rainbow colors. Or possibly a few cherry blossoms. Nothing big or complex, simple 'n sweet.
I also like how it looks like she's wearing lipgloss, you draw lips and hair and just about everything well.
xD Headshot!
