death in defence

I read something in the news that a driver accidentily hit a 2-year-old with his car. A mob of 20 or so very angry people attacked the driver. His passenger stepped out of the car to defend his friend. In the end, the cild didn't have any life-treating injuries, the driver got away, and the passenger was beaten to death by the angry mob.
Sad but true story, it happened like, 2 or more days ago.
