You live in the US right? If you do, the manga industry is greatly affecting careers and industry. Nowadays, if you can have the passion and learn Japanese, you can publish your work through Japan be be a considered a mangaka without being born in Japan! I think some artists adopted manga art styles, became manga drawers in the US, and were still considered "mangaka!" You will have to look into that!
