Chapter 1 - A Night Without Sleep

It was late at night, well past midnight. Everything was still and quiet. Not even a wind was out to shake the leaves in the trees. It was a cool, autumn night. November was drawing to a close. Soon it would be December and winter would freeze Domino.

Snap!

Kay stepped on a twig as she walked into the park. Her long hair was braided and she was wearing a black jacket, jeans, and sneakers. She looked around tiredly.

Sleep just would not come to her that night, so she had gone out for a walk. It was really dark outside. Hardly any of the streetlights were on. She went down the path of the park, relishing the stillness and the silence, other than her own footsteps.

The moon was close to being full and the stars twinkled. Kay sat down on a bench and looked up at the sky with a distant expression.

What now? It's been over a month since Adelinda had disappeared. Over a year since her mother and Liz were killed. Kay bit her lip at the memories. She stood up and walked away from the park, shoving her hands into her pocket.

Begin outside in the park made her think of spending hours in the garden with her mother and Liz, planting their roses. Kay walked for a long time, she wa snot even sure how long it was. But it was far. She went past the school, the fashion company she worked at, Kaib Corp., the arcade, she even walked by the Kaiba mansion only to see a limo driving out of the gate. She ignored it and continued her walk.

When she saw the limo stop to turn, she took off running through an alley and over a fence until she got to another part of town. The limowas nowhere in sight. Kay looked at her watch. It was past four in the morning. She took off running once again to get to her apartment.

By the time she got back, it was close to five. Kay quickl;y took off her clothes and jumped in the shower. It helped her catch her breath.

She sat on the floor and let the hot water run over her. Hopefully Kaiba had not seen her. She was sure it had been him in the limo. Mokuba told her he sometimes left early in the morning to get to work. She did not want him bothering her during school.

Kay quickly finished her shower and put on her school uniform. The jacket she wore today was green and the longer skirt was forest green. Kay put on her make up and twisted her hair up into a bun then put on a dark green choker with a light green bead shaped like a star. Kay put on some leggings that matched her skirt and were a little shorter than the skirt, her socks, and her shoes then she grabbed her bag, locked the door to her apartment, and ran off to school.

It was still kind of dark so she hurried and then climbed up the ladder on the side of the school to the roof and sat at the area with the broken fence to let her feet dangle over to side as she watched the sunrise.

After a while, the sun finally peeked over the horizon. Its warm light washed over her and she automatically felt more comfortable than earlier. The orange light caught in her green eyes and made her hair look more gold than is was.

"Kay-Chan?" a voice called.

"Huh?" Kay looked down to see Cat and Jackie looking up. "Hey guys."

"What are you doing up there?" Jackie yelled.

"Watching the the sunrise. I'll be right down!" Kay called before jumping to her feet and climbing the ladder down. She ran over to Jackie and Cat. "so, what brings you two here so early?"

"We want to ask Mr. Ryota about the upcoming Physics project." Kay groaned.

"Oh yeah..."

"We're gonna need another person in our group too. But we don't know anyone else in the class except Kaiba, and he always works alone anyway."

"If you had asked Kaiba to be in our group, I would have lost all of my respect for you guys."

"Sorry."

"Right. Come on, let's go."
