Chapter 2 - The Project

Kay, Cat, and Jackie walked down the hall to Mr. Ryota's classroom. He was inside grading some papers.

"Excuse me, Mr. Ryota?" Cat said. He looked up.

"Ah, hello girls. What brings you here so early?"

"Well, we wanted to ask about the Physics project coming up."

Kay waited out in the hall for Jackie and Cat seeing she had quickly lost interest in the topic. Soon, the bell rang and she went to her locker to get her books. Kay put the headphones from her MP3 player into her ears and walked to Oral Interp, getting lost in "Romeo and Juliet" by S.o.a.p.

Being so lost in the song, Kay failed to hear someone calling her name. A hand came down on her shoulder and she jumped and removed her headphones only to see Seto scowling at her.

"Yes?" she asked, looking at him. He blinked. Normally her greeting was an insult.

"I need you to babysitt tonight."

"Ok." She put her headphones back in her ears and continued walking. Seto stood there, dumbfounded.

Everyone was dumbfounded by Kay's behavior today. She did not mock Minako or Seto very much today, she did not pass notes in Language arts. All she did was work and listen to her MP3 player. And during lunch she was in the computer lab listening to "Nemo" and typing on the computer.

"Guys, is Kay alright?" Anzu asked.

"She has been acting strange lately," Yugi said, "the only thing I've heard her say all day today is hello."

"Alex, you're her best friend, is something wrong with her?" Khaos asked.

"I think so, but I am not sure what it is."

"This is not good."

"You're telling me."

"She seems depressed..." Jackie said softly.

"But why?" Cat asked.

"Well, we oughtta go and cheer her up!" Jounouchi said. "C'mon." Everyone stood.

"Oh look, it's the dork parade," Seto said as he walked by, "with the mutt leading."

"Grr...WHAT WAS THAT, RICH BOY?" Jounouchi yelled after them.

"Jounouchi, calm down!" Honda said.

"One of these days, Kaiba..." Jounouchi muttered, glaring menacingly after him.

Everyone walked to the computer lab and peeked in. Kay was sitting there, typing. By now the song she was listening to had switched to "Let Me Go." (I'm bored so I'm putting down the lyrics)

"HIYA KAY!" Jounouchi said. She looked at him.

"Hi." She looked back to the monitor.

"So what are you up to?"

"Homework."

But it's lunch, you should be stuffing your face with food."

"I'm not hungry is all." Jounouchi gasped.

"NOT HUNGRY?!"

"Pretty much."

"BUT THAT'S INHUMAN!"

"How is not being hungry inhuman?"

"...it...just...IS!!" Everyone else, who was watching them in the hall, sweatdropped.

"Right," Kay said, "whatever you say."

"So you hungry now?"

"...um...no..."

"Are you depressed?" he asked.

"He's...blunt," Kristen said.

"That's Jounouchi for you," Yugi said.

"No, why?" Kay answered.

"You're not smiling or talking much."

"I just don't feel good today."

"Well, you need cheering up. I'll bet I can make you laugh." Jounouchi told Kay a bunch of bad jokes and did stupid impressions. Kay did not seem to care for them. She barely responded. "Hmm...oh, I got it."

"Uh-oh, Jounouchi-" Danielle and Alex tried to warn, but they were too late. Kay punched Jounouchi in the gut and he backed away from her and she kept typing. Everyone's eyes widened.

"Why the heck did she do that?" Cat asked. Alex sighed.

"He tried poking her in the sides to make her laugh, and she does not like it when people tickle her. She hurts them, especially when she is in a bad mood."

"Dang." Jounouchi walked back into the hallway, wheezing a bit.

"...I...think I cheered her up...a bit..." He coughed. "Oh, my liver..."

"Note to self: don't poke Kay in the sides..." Honda said quietly.

The bell rang and Kay printed out her paper and walked out of the computer lab and everyone looked at her. She looked back.

"Um, hi?" she said. "Oh Alex, I'm babysitting Mokuba tonight. Just wanted you to know." Kay walked past them.

"Well, we have science next period with her, we'll see. Come on Jackie."

"Right." The two girls walked away from the girl.

Kay was sitting at her desk, writing in her Science Spiral the instructions for the project on the board.

Jackie and Cat sat in their seats and did the same thing. Cat passed Kay a note.

Cat: Kay, are you ok. Yo're acting really weird.

Kay: What do you mean?

Cat: Jounouchi already told you.

Kay: I am just feeling a little bit off today.

Jackie: But you are acting depressed and anti-social.

Kay: You guys are worrying over nothing.

Jackie: We're not so sure it's nothing.

Cat: Yeah. If something is bugging you, you can always tell us about it.

Kay: I appreciate that, but I'm fine.

"Ok class," Mr. Ryota said, "I want groups of four please."

"We need someone else in our group," Cat said.

"How about her?" Kay asked, pointing to a girl sitting at a desk two rows away. She had shoulder length hair that was brown but had a red tint to it and light brown eyes who was reading a book.

"Why not?" Cat said. She walked over to the girl. "Excuse me, um, would you like to be in our group?" The girl looked up at her.

"Um, ok." Cat smiled.

"Great. Come on over here." The girl picked up her stuff and sat an empty desk near the other girls.

"Hi, I'm Jackie, and this is Cat an dKay. Who are you?" Jackie greeted.

"I'm Tiffany."

"Nice to meet you Tiffany."

"Same here."

"WHAT?! Mr. Ryota, this is an outrage!" The girls looked to see Seto arguing with Mr. Ryota. "I ALWAYS work alone. Why do I have to work with a group NOW?" he yelled.

"Mr. Kaiba, you need to learn to work with others."

"But all of the groups are full."

"I'll just put in one." He looked around and pointed at the girls. "Work with Ms. Tsuru's group."

(A.N: Tsuru is Cat's last name. I actually looked in her story Eternal Snow for it...by the way, READ ETERNAL SNOW AND COMMENT SO SHE'LL UPDATE!!!)

"WHAT?! NO WAY!!!" Seto barked.

"Mr. Kaiba, if you do not cooperate, I will fail your for this assignment and give you detention for a week." This shut Seto up.

"Wow, this sucks..." Cat muttered. "Right, Kay?"

"Yeah. Kaiba is gonna make this project hell on Earth."

"There's the hold Kay for us." Tiffany blinked. Seto sat down, grumbling to himself.

"Hi Kaiba."

"...hey..." he said icily.

Kay pulled out a spiral and started doodling.

"Great, she's acting weird again."

"No more weird than usual," Kay told Cat cooly.

"Touché." Kay shrugged and continued drawing. Tiffany revealed herself ot be extremely intelligant. She came up with the idea for their project. (since I'm not in Physics yet, I have no details yet)

The group discussed it, except for Kay and Seto, who were pretty quiet. But by the end of class, even Seto thought Kay was being weird. Instead of her cheerful cross between a walk and skip, Kay walked rather stiffly out of the room. This wa sweird. Normally she would walk out in her silly little way to celebrate class ending.

"Not that I care, but what's wrong with her?" Seto asked, looking kinda confused.

"We wish we knew."

"Something is wrong with her?" Tiffany asked.

"Yeah. Kay is normally talkative an dcheerful. But today she's all quiet. We think it's depression."

"That could be it. When did it start?"

"Today."

"and does she tell you she's fine?"

"She said she's not feeling good."

"Hm...well, she could be a bit under the weather. Wait a few days."

"Tiffany." Tiffany looked and beamed.

"Hey Duke! I'll see you guys tomorrow." Tiffany hurried to the dor and hugged a boy with black hair in a ponytail, green eyes, a dice earring, and a mark under one eye.

"Come on, we should go." Jackie nodded and walked out of the room with Cat. Alex was waiting for them outside.

"Anything?"

"No. We asked Tiffany if she thought it was depression. She said Kay might be feeling sick and we should wwait a few days."

"I guess that's our best bet for now. Thanks guys."

"No problem."
