Blog Entry: World of GeneX - The Despair Seal
I'm going to do something a bit different this time. I'm going to forego the regular article and just write "author commentary." So, in doing so, I'll actually explain the difference. You do know that both is written by me, right?
The main article is more prosy, more factual, maybe more...grammatically correct. The author commentary is anything that pops into my head. It doesn't have to be supported by things I've written, it's just me talking... but the main article, it's purely based on things I've written (normally.) I can even toss spoilers into the commentary if I feel like it.
All right, so...
Author Commentary!
The Despair Seal is an item that came up purely because of the game. (for those who don't know, I was making this as a fangame. It was never finished) It wasn't supposed to be part of the story... Originally, Punchy was going to turn into Dark Punchy increasingly more frequently on his own. However, in the game, the dark form gave Punchy so many field abilities, and no power-up item. Knuckles had, like... 3 power ups and not as much powers. So I created the Despair Seal as a power-up for Punchy, and decided he wouldn't get to do any digging for this iteration of the game, while Knuckles would retain that ability... But this is neither here nor there.
The Despair Seal now exists in the story as the reason why Punchy can so easily swap between normal and dark forms. In game, it is activated by stepping on a "transformation pad." (Kosmo uses the same pads) When writing this year, I decided to incorporate the seal into the written story. This is where it got an actual look. (In game, you just get it from a chest and never really see it... The text says "You got the Despair Seal!")
The Despair Seal is a bracelet that looks like... well, it looks like a ring with the symbol of the Covenant of Despair on it. (The thirteen pointed star) Think the Crystal Ring with an evil Despair Star-jewel sticking out of it... I dunno, I've always been ashamed of my descriptive abilities. (since this is commentary, I'll be candid about that)
Anyway, the Despair Seal is used to train new agents of Despair in the art of dark magic. It helps recruits with the proper predisposition to awakon the dark powers within them. Apparently, it can also be used to suppress an excess of this power, as Punchy does when he reverts from his Dark form. Fera gives the seal to Punchy after sensing the strength of his dark form, and over time, seeks to goad Punchy into releasing more of this power. Maybe she thinks she can control it? Doesn't seem likely to end well by any means, does it?
Violet was trained via Despair Seal, but now she doesn't need or possess one.
The reason why I decided to do all commentary today is that this is literally all I can say about the Despair Seal right now. Next time, I'll do one more Despair article, and then after that I'll go back to more random articles for a bit...
