Metal Sonic, the robotic copy of Sonic built by Dr. Eggman, is assumed to be the same robot throughout the GeneX series. He (it?) first appears in chapter 3 of Tails the Fox, making him one of the earliest characters to appear in the story.
It is Metal Sonic who frees Copter from imprisonment at the beginning of Tails the Fox, acting on behalf of Dr. Eggman. In this first story, he retains his voice from Sonic Heroes, though Eggman has clearly reprogrammed him. He fights minor battles with Knuckles and Shadow, and later assists Shadow in defending Eggman's base from a GUN attack. Toward the end of the story, Knuckles deals a hard blow to his head that jogs his memory, and he recalls betraying Eggman and becoming "Neo Metal Sonic," while still retaining his reprogrammed memories, creating conflict within him. He nearly betrays Eggman again, but Kosmo's appearance interrupts this, and forces him to team up with the heroes to stop the morph.
After these events, Metal Sonic attempted to go off on his own. Unfortunately, he was obviously recaptured by Dr. Eggman. Now he has been re-reprogrammed, and his demeanor resembles his appearence in Sonic Rivals 2. His ability to speak has been stripped away, possibly because Eggman believes it has promoted rebellion in this particular robot. However, in Knuckles the Echidna, readers are made privy to Metal Sonic's robotic "thoughts," much like in Sonic Rivals 2.
Classic Metal Sonic and Neo Metal Sonic appeared, along with Modern Metal Sonic in GeneX Generations. They each had a brief role in the story, mainly acting as obstacles for the heroes of the chapter to overcome.
Maybe in the future, Metal Sonic can regain some of the independence he's lost. For now, he remains an ever obediant lackey of the Eggman Empire.
