In the GeneX series, Dr. Eggman built a special set of robots called the E-X series. Some of them, such as E-2X Alpha and E-3X Terra, appear prominently in the main stories. However, one may wonder... Whatever happened to E-1X?
The Halloween Specials, set in an alternate reality, answer this question. E-1X, otherwise called Xenegg, was the experimental first entry in the E-X series. As a first mission, he was sent to terminate the rogue robot, E-123 Omega. However, he failed, and was himself destroyed. This backstory holds true, even in the reality of the main stories.
However, in the Halloween Specials (GeneX Nightmare Zone), things take a darker turn after this. It is revealed that the E-X robots somehow possess a soul, and therefore Xenegg is able to return as a vengeful ghost. First, he destroys Omega, and then other aspects of his programming kick in. He is programmed to destroy Sonic, so he cannot rest until he has completed this mission.
Xenegg looks just like Gamma, but with an eerie green and black paint job, and a broken down body that later is revealed to be ghostly in form. He decieves Sonic and his friends into entering the Nightmare Zone, drives his own creator mad, and twists Shadow Chaos into an even more vicious monster. In the first story, there are 2 endings, one where, despite all the death he has wrought, Sonic manages to overcome Xenegg in the final confrontation and destroy his final form as Super Sonic. However, the other ending is the true ending, where Xenegg triumphs and kills Sonic, resulting in his sould crossing over into Hell.
This, however, is not the end. When Sonic is restored to life in the second special, "Spell of the Shadows", Xenegg's ghost rises once again, enraged at his afterlife's work being undone. In "The Black Curse", Xenegg has teamed up with fellow Nightmare Zone villain, Tabitha, and continues to wreak death on the surviving heroes in his quest to carry out his programmed purpose. However, Fred the Fennec's magic was able to banish him from the area, so he was absent from the climactic battle of the story.
But his vengeful spirit still roams. As far as anyone knows, only Sonic's death will satisfy him, and the Nightmare Zone makes him even more powerful, so his wish may in fact be a certainty...

This is the first of a couple Halloween Themed World of GeneX episodes! I'm not sure if I'll still be doing this by next October, so I might as well do the main Halloween articles that I feel ought to be done.
All 3 of the first E-X robots are Gamma recolors, I admit it. But, hey, Sega did a whole squad of Gamma recolors in Sonic Adventure... Then only ever reused the red model. Don't complain! (Also I suck at doing robots; don't even really want to try) (PS I'll talk about Terra's frequent redesigns when I do his article)
Xenegg, much like Punchy, is the most simplistic of the bunch because he's number 1. Hey, they're both green, too.... Actually, I never noticed that. I picked green for Xenegg as a Halloween color that would look appropriately eerie. He is described as "butler-esque" in the first story mainly because I like the character of Ramsley from Disney's "The Haunted Mansion."
But I think the main question to answer is... "Why you kill off EVERYONE in Nightmare Zone 1!?!?"
Well... I guess in the beginning, I really wanted to do a scary special. Just to see if I could. I wasn't 100% comitted to the idea, and that's why there was an alternate ending.
In the sequal, I wanted to keep some of the horror elements, but more than that, I wanted to write a good story (which would be my goal every year following). For a bit of shock value, I decided that the "Sonic dies" ending would become canon. Also, it was much easier to come up with a continuation for that ending. The other ending felt more complete as it was.
I didn't kill off EVERYONE in the first special, though. Rainbow survived.
I have a rule that certain characters are untouchable in the Halloween Specials. However, Rainbow died the next year, so don't think you have the rule figured out. :p
