Blog Entry: World of GeneX - Bucky the Rat
Bucky is a brown rat wearing a tattered white lab coat and purple shoes. He has bright, yellow eyes and commands the power of electricity. Much of his past is shrouded in mystery.
It is said that Bucky, or Buck, was one of the scientists that worked on Space Colony ARK 50 years prior to Shadow's awakoning. He was apparently present when the ARK was shut down. For some time after that, GUN had been hunting him, presumably to keep him quiet about the ARK incident, but even after the defeat of the Black Arms, Bucky is still on the run for reasons known only to him and Richard Gunner.
10 years prior to the Soleanna incident, Bucky spent some time there under the protection of Soleanna's king. His scientific expertise aided in the Solaris Project, with differing results in the different timelines.
Eventually, GUN starts catching up with him. But before he is captured, he manages to succeed in his lifelong research, and creates 5 genetic experiments: Punchy, Kosmo, Zipp, Vortex and Copter (in that order). As he completes his 5th project, labled Experiment 2 for personal reasons, GUN storms his lab and captures them both, but not before he can take steps to ensure that Copter will set him free.
While in GUN custody, Gunner forces Bucky to create Experiment 6, Guard the Gargoyle, with Dr. Nammad supervising. Little does he know that Bucky and Nammad are former colleagues, and the doctor allows Bucky to program the android to remain loyal to him.
After escaping from GUN and stopping the enraged Kosmo that was unleashed that same day, Bucky settled back into his experimentation. He created Heather, Crash, Spiny, Zeke and Whisk in that order. The Soleanna timelines result in problems for Heather either way, and Bucky is forced to hunt down the Chaos Emeralds so that his creation can be stopped in the newer timeline.
The setbacks of Kosmo and Heather do little to deter Bucky. He creates 4 more experiments. (Including Lucky the cat) Then, the Covenant of Despair emerges. Seeing what may be an opportunity to escape his fate as a fugitive, he allies himself with Despair... Though something seems to trouble him throughout this venture...
Bucky also appears in GeneX Generations. His ship, Shadow Arcangel, and his scientific expertise prove invaluable in the battle against Dr. Eggman and Mephiles the Dark.

This is the first monthly edition of World of GeneX. I will no longer be doing this every other week, but I may occasionally post mini-articles at random to keep things interesting.
Bucky... He's arguably the most important character in the story. But in the beginning, it took a while to work out exactly who or what he was. I knew I wanted a scientist character...that was about it. I thought of going as far as doing an Eggman recolor at one point. Of course, Sega goes and embarrases themselves by doing it themselves. (Eggman Nega??) But when I started tinkering with sprites, naturally I wanted to try making something better than mere recolors. Like many early characters, Bucky grew out of early sprite attempts.
I looked to supervillains like Magneto and Emperor Palpatine when I was imagining how exactly Bucky would move and behave. I originally stated that he flies by using "static electricity"...mainly as a joke; He actually uses his electricity to manipulate magnetism and fly much like Magneto.
There is much of his past that has yet to be explored. I have plans to peek into those stories during Knuckles the Echidna, so we may learn a bit more about Bucky's motivations relatively soon. I hope my readers look forward to it.
