Star Wars - Legacy of the Force: Betrayal
A pretty good story to listen to, though I prefer the lighter use of the force that makes it supernatural and not quite magical. My favorite part was Han Solo's mission. This is my first Star Wars story with Mara in it. She's okay, but doesn't quite stand out to me, so I don't care much for her character. I would have liked Luke's wife to stand out more rather than appearing as a typical Jedi. Besides, wouldn't it be difficult to find other Jedi near Luke's age who could actually be trained, given that the force was all but forgotten before? I've always like how Han can keep up with everyone even without relying on the force. Maybe Mars should have been a blaster armed vigilante, still the justice type, but with some spunk, that would have been cool and would provide some contrast to Luke as Leia and Han compliment each other so well. I also kind of liked the Anakin droid, silly as it was. Though this story does in many points feel far away from the movies...
Star Wars - Dark Forces: Soldier for the Empire
Unlike the other audio books I've listen to so far, this one has some variety in the voice action and minimal narration, which makes it feel like a radio show rather than an audio book. It's fast paced, which is good in some ways and not so great in others. Unlike Darth Plagueis. Which was filled with details of little consequence and moved slowly, Soldier of the Empire moves fast to the point where it feels too rushed. The start is a nice set up, but then the main character makes a discovery and suddenly changed loyalties too soon. The one moment when he is placed in doubt, the supposed climax, passes by quickly and is resolved without a struggle. Overall, the characters were not well developed. For all its slowness and seemingly unimportant events at least Darth Plagueis allowed us to get to know the main character, even if the end, the really interesting stuff felt rushed and cut off, Soldier of the Empire felt rushed all the way. Makes me wonder if it was meant as a radio show style thing, it would work better as such than as an audio book.
Star Wars - Tatooine Ghost
I loved this story. Maybe it's because I love the characters of Han and Leia, because I always wanted to see Han on a pod racer (even if he wasn't riding for the actual purpose of racing) or because the story feel very much like the original trilogy while still including a lot of references to episode 1, connecting the trilogies very well. Han and Leia are as we remember them and it was great seeing them revisit Tatooine and Leia learning about her paternal grandmother, as well as finding some closure, all while following as fast, yet just right, paced chase style story line. There's action combined with moments of uncertainty and unexpected twists along with a touch of humor that feel very much like the original trilogy. Luke only makes a small appearance, but Han and Leia are very good protagonists for this tale. Chewie and C3PO are there too and I did miss my beloved R2D2, but this is still by far my favorite Star Wars audio story, not counting the movie to audio adaptations. I honestly wish they would make this into a movie. It would probably become my favorite after episode 4.
