Adventures to Go!

Finished Adventures to Go. The last boss was a wimp. Getting the item needed to face him was more if a challenge than the fight. The only strong boss in the game was the golem because he skipped my character's turns and got 2 or 3 turns in a row... The game didn't have too much of a plot, it was all very simple missions with randomly generated dungeons and sometimes I ran in a few circles before I managed to trigger the needed event to move forward. I don't think I'll replay it, but there is something in which I must give it credit.

There was one thing that caught my attention, for once, the good guys were the good guys and the bad guys were the bad guys. It wasn't violent or anything, as it was a rather kid-ish game, but lately there's been a trend where they switch things around a la Disgaea. It was original for Dsgaea and maybe even for the first few games, but it's been so over done it's refreshing to see a game were the demons are the bad guys pure and simple. I kept expecting Amos to turn out to be some kind of double agent or to be the real villain, but no, he was just an intelligent old man totally on the side of the human race. I kept expecting Finn to switch sides when presented with some form of twisted logic or situation, but no, the warrior or light remained an enemy to the monster and demons to the end. I was glad for that because it's been a while since a came across a game where the humans are not somehow antagonized.

So yeah, when Finn said the treasure was rigthfully property of the humans, as the demons had stolen it first, he was telling the truth and his greedy tendencies that made me doubt his claims were nothing at all. When he said there was no way angels would punish him because they're on the side of the human race and he was helping humans by hunting monster (and treasure), he was telling the truth. He unmasked the sky folk pretending to be angels upon sensing that his powers of light were greater despite being human, thus they had to be impostors, and delivered his own brand of justice. The whole game I was waiting for some cliche to make a lame attempt to seem surprising, but the surprising thing was that it didn't happen. For once I was presented with a cocky hero lacking a tragic past, who slays villains that are not misunderstood, but simply evil by nature. It may seem overly simplified, but ironically, that's what made it different, it doesn't try overly hard to be surprising, it's just fun.
