Finally the smoke cleared and Kara could see the towers again. She still held her breath against the blast of magic reinforced fireball that Fergarths Wizards launched at her. She didnt mean to seem self-centred but there was a whole army out there on the battle field to blast apart, why did they have to pick on a dark, undersized blacksmiths daughter?
Kara released her breath slowly but remained sprawled across the ground with her arms over her head. She sniffed the air gingerly to see if any of the gasses the magical fire was fuelled by were still there. She found it foul smelling and dusty but breathable nonetheless.
She scanned about for Maran, her dragon watcher and caught the tiny glint of her sapphire blue scales from the corner of her eye a mile or two above her. It took months of training to find that little Dragon in the sky when she didnt want to be found, but after all the fights they had been through, Kara was confident that she could spot her even on the foggiest, cloudiest day of the year. Fergarths Wizards however could not and that was what made the little dragon such an asset.
Kara lay still on the ground, thinking. She hoped that the Wizards in the towers had taken her for dead and had started paying attention to something else. She ran over the aspects and turning points in her life that had brought her here, to this barren, charred wasteland.
Her childhood was as pleasant as it could have been under the circumstances. Her mother had died during childbirth and her father refused to marry again, leaving Kara the only child in the family, along with Maran, the family dragon and watcher. She more or less was a mother to Kara. Hard as it was growing up with only a father and an over sarcastic female dragon, she found it quite enjoyable. Her father had decided that Kara was to become a blacksmith, like him, and so he taught her the tricks of the trade as he called it. He taught her everything he knew, from how to make the tiniest of nails to the longest and most magnificent of great swords and everything else in between. Every second medium sized sword she made her father would make her train with it for three hours straight. The same thing happened with every dagger, crossbow and mace she made. Her father found it ironic that his daughter could make master swords and still be a master at using them. Kara, however found it more ironic that as soon as she turned twenty, she would need those skills.
A small but violent explosion went off southeast of her and she flipped over on to her back, hardly daring to breathe. She squeezed her eyes closed against the screams of dying men and women and again she wondered just how she managed to land herself here, in one of the biggest wars ever recorded.
Emperor Fergarth was the ruler of a neighbouring country. He was a ruthless and sinister man, many thought him as evil. Kara, however, thought that evil was too mild a word to use. Inhuman was closer to the truth.
The Emperor was obsessed with an artefact that was rumoured to be hidden somewhere in Karas country, an artefact she had been told was called the Amber Ring. Even though the Ring itself was supposed to be legendary, a mere myth, the Emperor was convinced that it was real. Up until a month ago, Kara hadnt believed a word of it.
She had to remind herself why she was here, a month ago she was that the Amber Ring was not and object but a marking. A birthmark of a small yellow circle.
Just like the one on Karas left shoulder blade.
There was only one thing that confused her, Fergarth wanted the Ring because legend said that the wielder could control the forces of nature, cook up hurricanes, cause volcanoes to erupt, start earthquakes and such like, but Kara couldnt seem do be able to do any of that, she couldnt even do any magic and the Amber Ring was said to be one of the most powerful things in existence. Maran had said that she would try to teach her some magic some day but was about as close as it came. Kara found that all it did was making her a highly wanted woman.
