Entropy is the scientific term for randomness, disorder, and chaos. It is based on the principle that matter favors disorder and tends towards higher entropy. What if this scientific principle does not simply apply to chemical theory? Perhaps society, also, tends towards higher states of entropy. If one thinks of our world as a macrocosm, then it is very possible that our world is mirroring the chemical microcosm. Society has difficulty remaining constant, and tends towards chaos. This theory of society's tendency towards higher entropy seems to be a common theme in literature and today's pop culture. Society's seemingly perverse ways have been acknowledged and critisized by writers of all kinds throughoout the ages. Even in works that are misconceived as innocent, existing for an interesting plot alone, are actually critical commentaries on government, society, and human nature. Two pieces often mistaken as such are Lewis Carrol's Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass and a recent film of today produced by Christopher Nolan, The Dark Knight. Both are different in an extraordinary list of ways; however, these differences only emphasize the fact that it is remarkable that they share a theme that is a critical commentary on society: that society is absurd and that organization can so easily be thrown into disarray.
