SCENE 1: GONE BERSERK
=====================
[The scene opens up over a panoramic view of Abel City as a dropship soars over
the cityscape. A NAVIGATIONAL COMPUTER voice speaks.]
NAVCOMPUTER: Arriving at drop point in 45 seconds.
[The voice of the Maverick Hunter Commander, SIGMA, can be heard as he radios to
X, who is aboard the dropship.]
SIGMA: X, do you copy? Fire at will once the target is in range.
[The dropship arrives at the drop point.]
NAVCOMPUTER: Now arriving at drop point.
[The deployment bay opens up, and X drops out, plummeting toward the city below,
and the scene fades to black.]
"THE DAY OF SIGMA"
[The title screen for the anime episode is displayed, and the scene cuts back
to the action as SIGMA orders his men into action. ZERO glances up at the speck
in the sky that is X, as X hurtles downward. X aims his Buster and begins to
charge up.]
X: Eyyaaaaahhh!!!
[X fires and his blast slams the rogue mechaniloid to the ground. X fires off
another short burst to correct his course, and drops to the ground.]
SIGMA: Chill Penguin Company, commence operation!
CHILL PENGUIN: Roger! I'll secure the area!
[CHILL PENGUIN and his team run towards the downed mechaniloid, but it rises up
and to their shock hasn't been damaged at all.]
CHILL PENGUIN: What?! The thing's hardly damaged!
[The mechaniloid raises its arm and starts to punch downwards.]
CHILL PENGUIN: Here it comes--!
[CHILL PENGUIN and his company leap backwards just in time.]
CHILL PENGUIN: .... Ah! Stop that thing!
SIGMA: Zero, do you have a fix on the main generator?
[The scene cuts to ZERO, who barely dodges a furious attack from the mechani-
loid.]
ZERO! It's no good! This thing's too fast! I can't get close!
[The mechaniloid grabs one of ZERO's teammates and hurls him into a group of
other HUNTERS.]
CHILL PENGUIN: Take this!
[CHILL PENGUIN breathes ice at the mechaniloid and freezes it to the ground, as
more HUNTERS shoot wires that bind it in place. Despite this, the mechaniloid
starts to break free.]
CHILL PENGUIN: ... It's so strong!
[X races around from a corner.]
X: Commander, that thing's way more powerful than we thought! I'll go back 'em
up!
[As X approaches, the mechaniloid arms a laser and sprays it all over the area.
The HUNTERS, CHILL PENGUIN, and SIGMA barely evade the attack. SIGMA glares
down at the mechaniloid from atop a tower as the mechaniloid fully breaks free.]
CHILL PENGUIN: Whaa--?
[The mechaniloid lunges out and grabs one of the HUNTERS in CHILL PENGUIN's
group.]
HUNTER: He- ... Help! Help me!
[X arrives on the scene and launches multiple blasts at the mechaniloid, but
they deflect off. The mechaniloid stalks forward as the HUNTERS leap backwards.]
ZERO: I won't let you push my friends around like that!!
[ZERO flies through the air and fires a blast which damages part of the mechan-
iloid's leg mechanism, but the damage doesn't slow the robot down any.]
CHILL PENGUIN: Hit the generator!
[X hesitates as he cannot get a clear shot without finding his comrade in the
line of fire. As he tries to get a clear shot, their comrade cries out again for
help.]
HUNTER: Help... me! Augh!
[CHILL PENGUIN only grows more agitated at X's hesitation.]
CHILL PENGUIN: The generator, X! Shoot the generator!
HUNTER: Augh... aghh!
CHILL PENGUIN: X! Hurry!
[X continues to hesitate, and finally SIGMA leaps in front of X and slashes at
the mechaniloid's generator with his beam saber. Unfortunately, their comrade's
arm is severed as well. The mechaniloid is completely shut down, and crashes
to the ground. All of the other HUNTERS, including X and ZERO, stand down and
survey the damage.]
HUNTER #2: Phew!
[ZERO sighs in relief, as the scene cuts to SIGMA walking away.]
HUNTER #3: Is the relief party coming?
HUNTER #4: Casualties confirmed! Prepare a full retreat!
HUNTER #3: Be sure to disarm all combatants!
[The scene fades out, then cuts to an ambulance siren as recovery teams arrive
on the scene. X walks glumly past, as CHILL PENGUIN stops him.]
CHILL PENGUIN: X! Why didn't you shoot?!
[X lowers his head.]
X: Chill Penguin, I... I...
CHILL PENGUIN: Do you have any idea how many casualties there would have been if
the commander hadn't taken that thing out when he did?!
[The injured HUNTER interrupts the conversation.]
HUNTER: X, it was my fault I let that mechaniloid get a hold of me. I'm just
glad the commander was able to get me out of that mess.
[The HUNTER is carried off to an ambulance, and X glances up to see SIGMA speak-
ing to another MAVERICK HUNTER.]
HUNTER #5: Yes, sir. Understood!
[The HUNTER runs off, and SIGMA turns to look at X. He approaches him as CHILL
PENGUIN scampers off.]
SIGMA: X...
X: Yes, Commander Sigma, sir?
SIGMA: Your aiming capabilities are no different than my own. You could have
easily hit the generator. You are aware that there was only a small chance that
our compatriot would have been hit by the blast, correct?
X: Yes, Commander... I...
SIGMA: Listen well, X. There are times when we Maverick Hunters cannot afford to
hesitate in pulling the trigger. We must become both sword and shield for those
who cannot protect themselves: that is our sworn duty. Never forget that!
[SIGMA walks past X.]
X: Commander Sigma...
[SIGMA speaks to a group of assembled HUNTERS.]
SIGMA: Commence retreat once casualties have been assessed!
HUNTERS: Yes, sir!
[SIGMA walks off, and ZERO approaches X and offers a sympathetic smile. The
scene then fades out.]

END OF SCENE 1

SCENE 2: HUNTER BASE
====================
[The scene fades in on the Hunter Base, and the scene shifts to the inside of
the base as X and ZERO walk in. Other HUNTERS can be heard speaking.]
HUNTER #1: There have been seven incidents of mechaniloids going Maverick this
month.
HUNTER #2: Has the commander spoken to Dr. Cain about it yet?
HUNTER #1: Yeah that's what I heard.
[X and ZERO walk past the other HUNTERS.]
X: Maverick... What could cause someone to go Maverick anyway?
ZERO: Programming errors, short circuits in the electronic brain... The very
things that give us Reploids our advanced processing could also be our greatest
weakness...
[Another HUNTER speaks from the background.]
HUNTER #3: What's he done this time...?
[The scene shifts to VILE being led away in handcuffs by two SECURITY REPLOIDS.]
ZERO: Vile... looks like he must have caused a ruckus again.
[ZERO turns to look at X.]
ZERO: I'm afraid for every kind and sensitive hunter like you X, there always
seems to be a borderline Maverick rabblerouser like Vile out there.
[VILE is led down the hallway toward the Detention Center, and the scene cuts to
the building where DR. CAIN resides. The scene switches inside, where SIGMA is
holding a conference with him. We see CAIN sitting in a chair that resembles an
advanced iron lung, with life-support devices.]
DR. CAIN: There's been a lot of action around here lately.
SIGMA: Yes Dr. Cain. Maverick crime has been steadily increasing. Even giant
mechaniloids have begun to run amok.
DR. CAIN: Hmm... And how is X doing?
SIGMA: As far as his judgment and abilities on the battlefield are concerned, he
has shown tremendous promise. However, he tends to hesitate when the situation
calls for decisive action.
DR. CAIN: He worries too much. Of course... that is his greatest feature, and
the source of his potential. Sigma... You don't have that problem at all. When I
found that robot, X, sealed away so long ago, I utilized his design concept to
give birth to you Reploids. Reploids have the ability to think and act on their
own - just like human beings. But the only one who seems to worry and fret so
deeply is X. That is the source of his great potential.
[SIGMA appears to disagree with this statement.]
SIGMA: His worrying shows potential? It's not a weakness?
DR. CAIN: Hmmhmmhmm... Well, I suppose it might be, under normal circumstances,
but in this case, it could be the beginning of a new connection between robots
and humans. Of course, we don't know yet if that potential will be a wellspring
of hope, or usher in an era of utter chaos.
[DR. CAIN sighs deeply as SIGMA's face noticeably darkens into a scowl.]
DR. CAIN: I've extended my life as long as possible to see it all play out, but
it looks like I won't be around long enough now...
[The scene changes back to the outside of Hunter Base as the sun sets. We then
see ZERO inside the training room replaying the days events. He attempts to hit
the mechaniloid's power generator, but misses and strikes the HUNTER instead.]
ZERO: Huh?!
[The simulation ends.]
COMPUTER: Training Sequence concluded.
[A hologram comes up showing ZERO's percent score of 95%.]
ZERO: Aw man, I missed five percent...
[STORM EAGLE approaches ZERO from behind.]
STORM EAGLE: Ninety-five percent... That's very good Zero.
ZERO: Storm Eagle. I thought you were supposed to be patrolling the missile base.
STORM EAGLE: With the automated defense system complete, they trimmed down my
tour of duty. Starting today, I'm just a regular Hunter again.
ZERO: I see.
STORM EAGLE: Anyway... We've been summoned to a hearing on the out-of-control
mechaniloid. Let's go, Zero!
[The scene changes to the central meeting space inside Hunter Base, where many
MAVERICK HUNTERS are shown gathered around. X, ZERO, STORM EAGLE, and CHILL
PENGUIN are also present along with the NAVIGATOR.]
NAVIGATOR: We now know that the mechaniloid stationed at the dismantled building
went berserk. However, it now appears that it was under the control of an
unknown party.
[The HUNTERS mumble to each other.]
X: So there was no one inside? It was being controlled remotely?
NAVIGATOR: That's right.
ZERO: Wait a minute.
NAVIGATOR: Hmm?
ZERO: What about the mechaniloid's security program?
CHILL PENGUIN: A system that complicated really shouldn't be so easy to HAAACK!
NAVIGATOR: There is a chance that the perpetrator has managed to completely
crack our security codes.
STORM EAGLE: Well where is it being controlled from?
NAVIGATOR: The signal has been camouflaged by being routed through a series of
satellites.
[The NAVIGATOR shows on a display the complex routing signal.]
NAVIGATOR: But the origin has been tracked to here - Abel City sector 16 East.
ZERO: You've got to be kidding me! That's so close!
X: Does Commander Sigma know about this?
NAVIGATOR: We've contacted him. X and Zero's team is to be dispatched immediate-
ly following a briefing. Those are his orders.
[X and ZERO respond simultaneously.]
X & ZERO: Roger!
[The scene abruptly cuts out.]

END OF SCENE 2

SCENE 3: INVESTIGATION
======================
[The scene cuts to Sector 16 East of Abel City.]
NARRATOR: EAST. 16 BLOCK
[X and ZERO approach a building from around a corner.]
X: Strange... it's too quiet.
ZERO: Wanna check it out, X?
X: Mm.
[X nods, and the two Hunters leap up the walls to the upper level. They inch
around the corner, and ZERO gasps at what he sees.]
X: What is it?!
[The two Hunters see multiple REPLOIDS lying on the ground, some slashed in
two, others with severe wounds, but all of them dead.]
X: ...
[Moments later, the area has been secured by the Hunters of the 17th Unit. X,
ZERO, STORM EAGLE, SIGMA, and CHILL PENGUIN are present. ZERO is on the ground,
examining another REPLOID. He looks up at X and shakes his head sadly, and X
looks at one of the HUNTER TECHS, who is examining one of the consoles.]
X: Well?
HUNTER TECH: No dice. I'm afraid that whatever data was here must be gone by
now.
ZERO: That's quite a feat.
[SIGMA approaches the two Hunters.]
SIGMA: Status report!
[The HUNTER TECH runs up to SIGMA.]
HUNTER TECH: Sir! Looks like it must've been an inside job. They were done in
shortly after the mechaniloid went berserk.
SIGMA: Hm. What do you make of it, Zero?
ZERO: Well, no matter who did it, it seems fairly obvious that they have incred-
ible combat skills. Each and every blow was directed at a weak spot.
SIGMA: Hmmm...
[SIGMA nods, then looks at X, and walks away. The scene cuts to SIGMA walking
outside to converse with STORM EAGLE. EAGLE nods at him, then turns to his men.]
STORM EAGLE: The scoundrel who caused all of this has taken his hacking data and
fled the scene. He is now a fugitive! Storm Eagle Company, begin searching the
area!
[The HUNTERS in his company respond.]
HUNTERS: Yes, sir!
[CHILL PENGUIN also speaks to his troops.]
CHILL PENGUIN: The Chill Penguin Company will check other sectors! Let's go!
HUNTERS: Yes, sir!
[All of the HUNTERS leave the area, and SIGMA stands alone in the flashing light
of the sirens, in a very ominous stance as the scene fades out. It cuts to the
Maverick Hunter Headquarters, where lots of crosstalk is going back and forth
as the NAVIGATORS and DISPATCHERS talk with units in the field.]
NAVIGATOR: Storm Eagle Company Troop A has been requested to Point 449.
DISPATCHER #1: Another incident in Sector 28 West!?
DISPATCHER #2: Please be patient! We're still tracing the signal!
DISPATCHER #1: Several civilians are reporting a problem.
DISPATCHER #3: I think Vile is being punished. We're already...
[The comment trails off into the background as another DISPATCHER speaks.]
DISPATCHER #4: You've reached Hunter Base. Another berserk mechaniloid?! Where!?
OK... What!? That close?!
[The scene switches to a panoramic view of Abel City, as explosions from the
new rogue mechaniloid are seen. Both HUMANS and REPLOIDS are shown fleeing the
scene. Some MAVERICK HUNTERS arrive and try to contain the mechaniloid.]
HUNTER #1: No way you're getting past me!
[The scene cuts to a dark cell, where VILE is being held. He is chained at both
feet and hands, and sits quietly on a bench. As noise from outside filters in,
someone can be heard approaching. The door swings open, revealing SIGMA, and
VILE turns to look at him.]
VILE: Come to reprimand me in person, did you?
[The scene then cuts to X and ZERO, riding down the highway on their Ride
Chasers.]
X: I can't believe it's gotten this bad!
ZERO: All these berserk mechaniloids! Why do I get the feeling that they're just
here to distract us?
X: You think whoever's behind this has a different goal in mind?
ZERO: Hmm... Huh?
[As ZERO ponders it, the comm screen on his Ride Chaser chimes, and an image of
the HUNTER NAVIGATOR appears.]
NAVIGATOR: X! Zero! We have an emergency! The ex-Maverick Hunter Vile has just
escaped from his cell!
X: What!?
NAVIGATOR: Report to the scene immediately!
[X and ZERO respond in unison.]
X/ZERO: Roger that!
[The two reverse their course and head for the Detention Center where VILE was
being held. The scene then cuts back to Maverick Hunter Headquarters, where the
staff is once again rapidly doling out updates to the field units.]
DISPATCHER #3: Another rogue mechaniloid has been reported moving in Sector 8.
DISPATCHER #2: Just a little while longer... we've almost got the signal traced!
NAVIGATOR: X and Zero's team is headed for the Detention Center now. What is
your next order? ... Commander? Commander Sigma!
DISPATCHER #4: What's the matter?
NAVIGATOR: Something's wrong. I can't raise Commander Sigma!
[The scene cuts to the Detention Center, where X and ZERO once again find many
Reploids critically damaged and killed.]
ZERO: There's no way this could be Vile's work. He doesn't have this kind of
attack capability. All the blows were directed to weak spots... Whatever Reploid
is responsible for this, they must have great analytical ability and combat
skills...
[ZERO's eyes widen as he recalls the conversation he had with SIGMA earlier in
the day about some Reploid having great combat skills. His gasps as he pieces
the puzzle together.]
ZERO: Wha-?!
X: So, you think whoever's responsible made the mechaniloids go berserk as a
cover so he could spring Vile?
[X and ZERO's comm units chirp.]
ZERO: This is Zero.
NAVIGATOR: X, Zero! We've managed to trace the hacker's location!
[The conversation continues as X and ZERO depart the Detention Center and resume
travel on their Ride Chasers.]
NAVIGATOR: The berserk mechaniloids are being controlled from the Missile Base.
I've tried contacting all personnel, but the signal is being disrupted! I
haven't been able to get through to Commander Sigma for a few minutes, either.
ZERO: ... I've got a bad feeling about this...
[The scene fades as X and ZERO accelerate towards the Missile Base.]

END OF SCENE 3

SCENE 4: MISSILE BASE
=====================
[The scene cuts to an external shot of the Missile Base facility. X and ZERO
ride in towards the entrance on their Ride Chasers, and enter the launch control
building. After they make their way in, ZERO looks over the edge of a railing,
and turns to X.]
ZERO: Someone's here!
[The two Hunters nod, then move further down the hall. They run down towards the
control room with their weapons drawn. As they approach the entrance, ZERO calls
out to the figure inside.]
ZERO: Don't move!
X: Huh? Commander Sigma!
SIGMA: X! Zero! It looks like the enemy was using the security system here to
control the mechaniloids.
ZERO: So that must be how they managed to camouflage their location.
X: They knew it would take a while to trace!
[X and ZERO walk past SIGMA, and the two begin inspecting the controls at the
bank of consoles. SIGMA approaches from behind, and draws his saber from his
belt.]
ZERO: Commander Sigma... Headquarters told us they were having trouble contact-
ing you.
SIGMA: Ah, yes. I had to deactivate my transmitter to maintain cover. Of
course... none of that matters now.
[ZERO glances out of the corner of his eye and sees SIGMA make his move. He
whirls around and catches SIGMA's arm as he tries to impale him.]
ZERO: Aughh!
X: Commander Sigma! Zero!
[SIGMA narrows his eyes at ZERO, who's still clutching his arm in a defensive
posture.]
SIGMA: Tell me... how did you figure it out?
ZERO: The perpetrator was so skilled... not many Reploids have specs that high!
It wasn't hard to put two and two together... that's why I was ready for your
attack just now!
SIGMA: I congratulate you on your detective skills, Zero, but it is X who
deserves my admiration. His innocence is what makes him special, you see... He's
an incredible Reploid specimen...
[SIGMA reaches out and seizes ZERO by the head.]
SIGMA: Wouldn't you agree?
ZERO: Agh! Agggh! Ugh!
X: Commander Sigma! What are you doing!? Let him go, please!
[SIGMA turns to face X, and deliberately holds ZERO in the line of fire.]
SIGMA: Now's your chance, X. Fire! If you really want to stop me, you'll have to
shoot, destroying Zero in the process!
X: I...
SIGMA: What's the matter? Shoot!
[X continues to hesitate.]
SIGMA: Hah ha ha ha! Yes! You can't do it, can you, X?
[SIGMA throws ZERO into the air and slashes at him with his saber, disabling
him. ZERO screams in pain.]
ZERO: Eyaaaaagghhh!! Agggh!!
[ZERO crashes to the ground, unconscious.]
X: Zero!
[X glances over at him, and SIGMA takes advantage of X's distraction to rush
towards him. He grabs X by the throat and hoists him into the air.]
SIGMA: As I've already told you, X... There are times when you can't hesitate to
pull the trigger! You couldn't do it... You missed your last chance to stop me!
[X struggles to aim his cannon at SIGMA's head as SIGMA pulls out a control
switch that arms the missiles.]
SIGMA: We are one button away from launching every missile stored in this
facility - they're aimed at our own city. What'll it be, X? Will you sacrifice
the city? Or shoot me? Perhaps it's time you laid down your arms!
[X reluctantly lowers his cannon, and he detaches his Buster from his arm so
that it falls to the ground.]
SIGMA: Heh heh heh heh! Bwah hah hah ha!
[SIGMA hurls X to the ground, and X tries to get to his feet.]
X: Why... why are you doing this?
SIGMA: For our future, X... I believe that it's time we put Reploid potential to
the ultimate test!
X: You set this up from the start... made the mechaniloids go berserk... caused
the death and suffering of countless innocents...
[SIGMA only looks at X.]
SIGMA: There are many others on my side. You see, evolution requires sacrifice.
Behold!
[SIGMA presses the launch control, and X screams in horror.]
X: NO!!!
[All of the missiles proceed to launch, and the scene cuts back to the Hunter
Base.]
NAVIGATOR: What's this? The Missile Base... it...!
DISPATCHER #1: The missiles have been launched! Now calculating trajectory!
[The scene cuts to DR. CAIN's room.]
DR. CAIN: Reploids... created by human beings... yet possessing abilities far
beyond our own.
[The scene cuts back to the Missile Base, where X rushes towards SIGMA in
anger.]
X: Eyaaaaah!!
[The scene cuts back to the Hunter Base, where the Hunters gather around the
NAVIGATOR's console.]
NAVIGATOR: 46 seconds until missile contact! They're headed for... Abel City!
[All around the city, the missiles make contact and annihilate sections of the
city. The scene cuts back to DR. CAIN's room.]
DR. CAIN: ... Mankind's arrogance...
[The area surrounding him ignites as a missile aimed at the facility strikes.]
DR. CAIN: ... No....
[DR. CAIN vanishes in a flash of nuclear light. After an external shot of the
building he was in exploding, the scene cuts back to the Missile Base. SIGMA
stands having impaled X on his beam saber, and X winces and gasps in pain.]
SIGMA: You invited all of this upon yourself, X. Limitless potential and limit-
less danger both lie within you.
[X is motionless; his eyes wide with shock from the wound he's sustained.]
SIGMA: Is this the end? Not at all... this is the beginning! The beginning of
my new world!
[The final missile launches as X's eyes grow distant. The scene zooms in on
them, and X experiences a series of flashbacks of his creation. The scene shows
X, only his torso completed, lying on a table with various wires connected to
devices in the room.]
DR. LIGHT: ...X. X. X!
[X's eyes flutter open, and he focuses on DR. LIGHT standing over him.]
X: Who are you?
DR. LIGHT: It is I, Thomas Light. I created you, X.
X: X... You called me... X. Is that my name?
[X's eyes fade as his power source is deactivated, but DR. LIGHT continues to
speak.]
DR. LIGHT: That's right. It's a variable. It represents limitless potential. You
see, you are a new type of robot who can think for himself.
[The scene fades to another flashback, some time later. X is nearly completed,
and DR. LIGHT has aged noticeably.]
DR. LIGHT: Hmmm...
X: What's the matter, Doctor? You look tired.
DR. LIGHT: You truly are just like us humans, X. Ahh...
[DR. LIGHT coughs.]
DR. LIGHT: That's why I'm afraid that mankind is not quite ready to accept you.
[X's eyes widen.]
DR. LIGHT: We are not yet mature. They may very well view your limitless evo-
lutionary potential as something to be feared. The name "X" also carries
connotations of danger.
[X flickers out of consciousness, and the scene fades to another flashback,
after X is completed. Once again, DR. LIGHT looks much older.]
DR. LIGHT: I'm sorry, X. I didn't have enough time to see you enter the world.
X: Dr. Light...
DR. LIGHT: I've given you the power to think, to worry, and to grow, and evolve
as you fight. But... it is too soon for that power to be unleashed.
X: Doctor! I'll use this power to fight for justice! To fight for hope!
DR. LIGHT: Of course you will. I believe it to be so. X... I want you to use
that conscience of yours to fight for the people of the future. They will need
someone like you to guide them.
[DR. LIGHT keys some controls on the capsule surrounding X, and the glass begins
to cycle closed.]
X: Doctor!
[Once the capsule has sealed, DR. LIGHT peers in through the viewport in the
top.]
DR. LIGHT: Farewell, X. You are the world's one true hope...
[The image fades out, and the scene returns to the present. X's eyes are clear
now, and his helmet jewel and hand begin to glow.]
SIGMA: Huh!?
[SIGMA reacts in shock as X forces himself down the rest of the beam saber
blade, and springs off. X lands, then leaps towards SIGMA.]
X: SIGMA!!
[X uses his remaining hand to seize SIGMA's face, and his attack leaves devas-

[X's helmet jewel and hand cease glowing, and he begins to shut down.]

[Smoke rises from the wound X sustained. SIGMA walks over and begins to laugh
maniacally.]
SIGMA: Hah ha ha ha ha! Bwah hah ha ha! So this is the power you possess. The
potential to advance all Reploids!
[SIGMA continues to laugh. The scene cuts to ZERO as he wakes up after SIGMA is
gone.]
ZERO: Sig...ma... X...
[ZERO stands up, and stares at X, and the damage he took.]
ZERO: X... X!!!
[The scene fades out, and cuts to an image of SIGMA overlooking the burning
city. His armor is now outfitted with spikes, and he is wearing a red cloak. He
continues to cackle as he watches the fires.]
SIGMA: Bwah hah ha ha!! Come and get me, X! The time has come to prove your
mettle against me. This fight will decide the fate of all Reploids. The battle
may be over, but the war is just beginning!
[SIGMA continues laughing with maniacal glee as the scene fades to black.]
