Did Mockingjay live up to my expectations?
No
Was it as good as the other books?
No
Will I ever read it again?
No
Was it a big waste of time and paper?
YES
*SPOILER ALERT! If you are currently reading Mockingjay don't read this. If you plan to read Mockingjay don't read this. If you are borderline and aren't sure, then read this and save yourself the money and time.*
I will start out telling you, I love the Hunger Games series. So don't get me wrong, I'm not just bashing the series because i don't like it or anything. That is the opposite from the truth. I LOVED the first one, and was hooked the first few pages in. The second one was good too, it didn't quite meet my expectations, and lets face it the Quarter Quell was totally just an easy way to introduce certain characters and plots that Suzanne Collins could have found a more inventive and believable way to introduce. But other than that i really had no problems with it. But COME ON, Mockingjay was just what it's name suggests: A total mockery of the series. The first half of the book was ok, except for the fact that the GIRL ON FIRE was reduced to a doped up pawn for the rebels and a total shadow of her former self to boot. Hiding in closets, acting like an airhead... it made me sick. Girl on fire? Don't make me laugh. That was not her anymore. More like smolder-girl. She wasn't even remotely the same. Yeah in the previous books she whined in her head also but she always DID something about it. Suzanne Collins needs to learn you can't just change a character's personality between books to suit her own end. People don't change like that in the course of a month or two. Not without being full-blown mad, and that she was not. Her psyche was not that cracked. And anyways, people like Katniss get stronger in bad circumstances not weaker, Collins even established that in the earlier books. Plus, Katniss even had her best friend and family back!
Now the second half of the book was something different entirely.
They rescue Peeta, because new Katniss is next to useless without him (*Gasps* SHOCKER!) and he comes back not just half crazed, but brainwashed and fully crazed. He tries to kill Katniss because Snow drove him crazy with torture and really did break his psyche (ANOTHER SHOCKER!) So HE is even more useless than now Katniss at that point, and that is saying something. They (the rebels, NOT Katniss or Peeta) take all of the districts and head out for the capital. They take Katniss with (In her state, even if they don't know everything... WTH were they thinking? Did they think she was going to follow commands like a good soldier or some nonsense like that? Like she even did that in her right mind!) They do some sort of Photo-op in the Capital streets (SERIOUSLY WTH?) and someone steps on a minefield. Oh and by the way they have slightly rehabilitated Peeta at that point and he comes with them, still not in his right mind and sometimes trying to kill Katniss (another WTH moment) Apparently rebel leader wants her dead, now BECAUSE she is the Mockingjay... go figur'. Gale and Finnick and some others are there too. And they all get separated from the way they came and Peeta tries to kill Katniss and gets another soldier killed and they get away and the capitol thinks they are dead but they aren't. The capitol finds out they are still alive and sends these Muttations after them and these things kill ANYTHING in their way. Snow is one sick puppy alright. At least he didn't change any. So scaly, beastly, ugly eats-the-heads-off-of-people monsters are chasing them. So I think it was four of what was left of their team was eaten by those monstrosities, along with random Avoxes that you hear their gurgled cries. And one of the members to die was FINNICK! OMG WTF? I know all of my favorite characters always die but geez Collins, cold hearted much? He JUST married the love of his life and later you find out she was pregnant, but that kid will never know his/her father because you killed him off to move the plot faster. Thanks a lot, I'm sure if that kid was real he/she would understand. NOT! Oh and in the end she fails in her mission anyways, not only did she not kill Snow like she planned, but she also got to see her little sister die right in front of her because her sister, who wasn't old enough to actually be out in the line of duty by the way, gets tricked into a trap that was of Gale's and Beetee's design (AGAIN WTF?) because she was a MEDIC! A MEDIC! And it turns out it wasn't even the effing capitol who did it? It was Coin, the district 13 president? She wanted the Mockinjay silenced so she could stay in power. Ok it never directly says that but it gives enough hint at it. And seriously it totally makes Prim's and Finnick's deaths downplayed alot. I mean seriously a central theme of the whole series was Rue's death, a girl that Katniss only knew for like two or three days. But it gives like half a sentance when Finnick dies and like two sentences to decrible Prim's? Her baby sister that she went to the Games for in the first place? SERIOUSLY WTH!?!?!?!!!! The same little sister that she had been looking after most of her life?! SERIOUSLY!!!! *sighs in despondency* And then when it is all over she has shot Coin instead of Snow (she was supposed to be executing Snow at the time) and then is sent to live in the rubble of district 12 (though the victory village is still intact. Oddly convenient if you ask me) and she is myserable and though earlier she had tried to commit suicide alot when she is free and not being watched she doesn't try (uhm.... why try to kill yourself, and then when you actually can... not do it? That makes less sense than Prim's death being downplayed) and then Gale never comes back, EVER because he thinks that Katniss will never be able to disassociate him from the cause of Prim's death and so gets a fancy cool job in district 2 and you never hear about him again. And then Peeta randomly shows up after a time and she doesn't really hang around him and then somehow he is almost sorta normal and they eventually hook up.... ok then.... that makes TOTAL SENSE *cough cough*
And finally the worse of it: THE EPILOGUE.
Do I need to explain to those of you who have read? It was a total piece of crapola. Come on, we all know it. She ends up marrying Peeta (*gasps* WOW *rolls eyes* him being the only guy wanting to have anything to do with her when she is a sad sack like that and he marries her. Didn't see THAT comming... *rolls eyes again*) They have little mini Peetas and Katnisses (a boy and a girl, carbon copies of themselves but with eye colors switched) after like 15 years of marriage because PEETA wanted them real bad. She doesn't say their names. And she talks about having nightmares and being a miserable sad sack and how her kids play on top off the mass grave of her people from 12 who died in the bombing. Because they turned that field into a grave and let their kids play there(that doesn't even DESERVE a comment... that's just wrong). And she is not even a freakin' spark of her former self. If you have seen Howl's Moving Castle the movie then think of her as Calcifer after he got hit with a bucket off water... except she was completely 100% out and had no flames at all. Seriously, though. Collins is NOT good with endings... she probably should have stuck to screenwritting. That is just how TV works, not literature. We expect less of TV. Novels are the big leagues and trilogies are the Major League of the big leagues. A total swing and a miss Collins, three strikes and you out... I hope the next two books you write (if you ever write another novel) aren't your next two misses if you plan to stay in the game for much longer.
Originally this blog was bigger, I edited it so it didn't sound as rantie but it still does XD oh well. The whole thing is a rant... wow I AM a bit to passionate about books aren't I?
