Gameplay
I love playing Kaede, because she doesn't have a Gauntlet or the powerful weapons that Samanosuke has, it keeps you (the player) on your toes to jump back and to block, to fight enemies more carefully. The people who whine, complain and dog (as they always do) that she's too hard to use... well don't blame the character, blame yourself because half time, it's the player that sucks. Now don't get me wrong, there are some pretty tough games out there... but playing Kaede wasn't that difficult for me and I'm not a hardcore gamer at all.
Different Fighting Styles
Samanosuke is the Samurai, and because of his Gauntlet, armor and powerful weapons, he has the advantage of being the offense warrior. Kaede is the Ninja, and because of her lack of a Gauntlet, armor and powerful weapons, she has to be the defense warrior.
When it comes to the ability of taking souls to heal your self and for points, the reason why Jubei's teammates in Oni 2 were able to because in the story, they found something that allowed them to and for game play, it makes it easier. It was an improvement they made from Oni 1... but there were not that many. So if Kaede weren't killed, she would have been able to absorb souls too, although she was able to in Blade Warriors.
Best Female Character In The Series
Kaede was and still is the best female character in the Onimusha games, the others didn't come close.
Oyu wasn't really a good fighter, she was more of a child and a damsel in distress. The whole so-called love thing between her and Jubei happen way, way too fast, it wasn't believable one bit and it wasn't needed. It was one of the many things that made Oni 2 pointless. They rest of Jubei's teammates weren't any better. I mean they ended up attacking each other, their problems got in the way of their missions and they needed to be bribed in order to do anything.
In Oni 3, Michelle looks and comes across as poor rip-off of a female from the Resident Evil games like Claire Redfield and Jill Valentine. It was like they made her look young like Claire, but blonde, tougher and with the police or military like Jill.
Ako... oh god... she was just some annoying stereotype anime character that was completely out of place in the game. She was almost like Steve in RE: CV or Raiden in MGS2: SOL, a character that completely ruins an entire game. It also didn’t help that her voice was annoying as hell. I wish she had been more like Tinkerbell from Peter Pan. Now she was a bit of a dog and a few other things but at least she kept her damn month shut.
It only got worst with Sakura in Drawn of Dreams, she's too boy crazy, too whiny, and gets off on her mission too much.
Kaede took her missions seriously, she was much more of a warrior she acted more like an adult. She's the type of female I just love, we need more characters like her. It's too bad that the Onimusha games went from a somewhat realistic Samurai horror/supernatural with a bit of real Japanese history in it... to a dumb kids anime action crap.
In 2012, FHM included Kaede among the nine "sexiest ninja babes in games" at number #6.
