“No! You feeble old man! You can’t do this!”
The Third Hokage stared back into Orochimaru’s eyes. “I am doing what I must to protect the village! If it wasn’t me, it would be someone else Orochimaru! Do you really think you can crush the Leaf Village’s spirit? Not while there is one living, breathing Shinobi left!”
The Third Hokage had Orochimaru right where he wanted him. It meant sacrificing himself, the Hokage didn’t care. He had made Orochimaru what he was by training him, despite his obvious bloodlust and warped thinking. Now, he was going to end it. He was going to seal Orochimaru’s soul.
Ekyt ran through the streets, keeping pace with Naruto, Sakura, Sasuke, and Sai. Sai was drawing as rapidly as he could. Lions leapt out, attacking the Sound and Sand Village’s Shinobi. Naruto’s clones were battling multiple enemies, while Sasuke’s fire attacks held everyone else at bay. The few that leaked through were devastated by Sakura and Lee’s taijutsu.
Ekyt trailed behind them, as per his orders. The orders, however, were what was bothering him. Well, one of the things anyway. Lord Hokage had ordered Ekyt not to get involved unless necessary. Ekyt couldn’t figure out why. He was a chunin, he was in ANBU- why was he being held back? And how the hell had an artist taken his place as Team 7’s signature fourth member? Not that there was anything wrong with Sai, Ekyt just wanted a reason.
Maybe it’s the fact I can’t draw…nah. Lord Hokage is a patron of the arts, but he’s never held anyone back because they can’t wield a brush the same way they wield a kunai or sword.
Sai was still struggling with personality issues. The only one hadn’t managed to seriously offend yet was Ekyt. Seeing the troubled young man, Sai gave another effort to talking to him.
“You are disturbed!” Sai declared, apparently thinking it a compliment.
Ekyt forced himself to withhold the glare and snarl, trying to be understanding.
“Thanks Sai. I was aware of that.” Ekyt’s cold tone told Sai that he had messed up.
“I’m sorry Sai. It’s nothing, don’t concern yourself with it,” Ekyt said, calmer and more placid this time.
Sakura stayed near Sasuke, partly because they had been paired together, partly because he had finally done it- Sasuke and Sakura as a couple was official.
Lee and Naruto had been paired together for this mission. The power the two had combined was incredible, enough to stave off this invasion substantially. But Naruto’s chakra use was still reckless, and Lee would tire eventually.
That left Sai and Ekyt. They had been termed “Bunbu Itchi”, which meant “Pen (Sai) and Sword (Ekyt) in accord.” Even though Ekyt would have preferred someone less creepy, he was one of the few that got along with Sai. But still, being paired with him on a consistent basis…Ekyt got sympathy for that, seeing as how Sai was still struggling with having emotions. It seemed none of them knew that Ekyt didn’t care about that. His somber attitude was due to a number of problems, including Lord Hokage’s peculiar orders. This also included some confused emotions on the part of the Leaf chunin. It was becoming less and less of a secret that he had something of a crush on Sakura. He had never stated it, however, except to Lee, who was his training partner. He was fond of saying “I’m not good enough for her” and “I can’t compare to Sasuke”, among other dim and not-always-true conclusions such as “I care about her enough to not burden her with guilt”, “Nothing good can come of admitting this”, and “Besides, the girl is out of my league. We’re not even playing the same game.”
“Hey, what’s that?!” Naruto shouted back. His first instinct was to run ahead and look, but they had been told not to break ranks. All but one of them.
“I’ll check it out,” Ekyt yelled back, his voice a hoarse whisper. He used the Body Flicker jutsu to speed up to it. His good eye widened in shock.
“Reaper Death Seal!” Lord Hokage called, a smile growing on his face, despite the pain.
Orochimaru’s snake-like eyes widened. He felt his soul begin to leave his body.
“NOOOO!” he shouted, before his body began to fall.
This jutsu was incredibly powerful. It sealed away the soul of the target, but it was fatal to the user.
Ekyt heard the jutsu being called. No…Lord Hokage can’t die…the village will crumble…there’s only one thing to do…
Ekyt leapt in between Orochimaru and Lord Hokage. He shouted in pain. A seal mark appeared on his stomach.
The Third Hokage was shocked. Where had Ekyt come from?
Ekyt pushed himself up. “I’m sorry sir…I couldn’t let you die…that would mean the village would die.”
Lord Hokage, while not angry with Ekyt, couldn’t help but be angry at the situation, the circumstances being what they were.
“You are in possession of Orochimaru’s soul…have you even the slightest idea of what could happen? He could overtake your soul, destroy your body, even manipulate it to his will! It was a foolish thing to do!”
Ekyt looked Lord Hokage in the eyes. “Then dismiss me. I know I was wrong, but letting you die is not something that I could have lived with.”
Lord Hokage’s tone turned sorrowful. “You realize…that I have no choice…I have to dismiss you as an ANBU agent, a teacher, and as one of my bodyguards. You are, in effect, removed from my council. And…I really hate to do this…but you will have hearing as well. You could be demoted to genin, or…”
Ekyt’s face froze, then stiffened up. “I’ll take the consequences. Incidentally, don’t bother with the hearing, I won’t show up. Just be honest Lord Hokage. How likely is it that I’ll be demoted, or worse?”
Lord Hokage bowed his head, but said nothing. He didn’t need to.
“Well, then I’m going to go fend off the attack while I’m still able,” Ekyt said coldly, drawing himself up.
He was struck by a sudden thought. “Summoning Jutsu!” he muttered. Instead of his dog or his water Dragon, Ekyt was greeted by a huge snake. Not knowing why, Ekyt jumped into it’s mouth.
Naruto stopped in his tracks. Gaara. And Kankuro.
This is gonna be tough…I’m running low on chakra…This is gonna take a miracle…
BLAM! The earth suddenly shot up in front of the Leaf Village group. A giant snake burst through. From it’s mouth, it produced a person. But it wasn’t Orochimaru…it was Ekyt?
The Leaf Village seemed to stop. Everyone wanted to see this. Where was Orochimaru, and why was Ekyt leaping from the snake’s mouth?
Ekyt felt himself smile.
“Gaara…” Ekyt began, his hand going to his eye. Then, uncharacteristically, Ekyt licked his lips and spoke in a hiss. “How pathetic. You aren’t even worth playing with…”
While Ekyt was talking, Gaara’s sand suddenly flared up. He had been attacked. But how?
Ekyt was behind him, while a clone was talking.
“Your skills are great…but not on the same level as mine,” Ekyt spoke in the hiss again, even adding a little laugh. His mind, however, was thinking differently. So, this is Orochimaru’s skills…even I can feel his chakra…I’ve got to fight him back, he can’t have my body!
“Death Foreseeing Technique!” Ekyt spoke again, in the same unconcerned raspy whisper.
Gaara fell to the ground, his hands on his temples. He shook, seeing his death over and over again. He let out an unearthly howl.
Ekyt walked over to him and picked him up, holding Gaara up high.
“What an annoying ability, this sand of yours…I think I’ll get rid of it…Dead Demon Sealing jutsu!”
Ekyt started to jam his hand into Gaara, but stopped himself. He spoke in his own voice.
“No…no, that’s not right. I can’t do that…I won’t do it! I’ve already won…”
Ekyt forced his hands to let go of Gaara. The Sand Kazekage hit the ground hard. Ekyt looked at himself sadly, not liking what he had become.
For the good of the village…all it’s brought me…is misery…there must be a way to stop this…
