TeeJay87Paint is small beer - if the ornament on shield is engraved, think about search for matching material and the burden of fixing the damage. Without help of magic or modern technology, it'd have been a challenge to fix such object.

FirielYeah, definitely. Which means we're looking at a ceremonial shield if it's historical or historical-fiction which is half-trying. However, it's still an open question depending on the genre - since it's my design and I wasn't copying an identical existing historical pattern (that I know of), it;s still possible that this belongs to a character in a fantasy-based setting, in which scenario either the "help of magic" supposition might be met or there might be protective charms embedded which would be of sufficient value to be worth periodically replicating if the thing got damaged. ;) I guess it depends on what sort of story I wanted to tell. ^_^
