So I just got a Wacom Tablet yesterday (early Christmas present), and I attempted my first 'digital' art. I think that's what you call it...
Then I realized I only have Adobe Photoshop 6.0, which is apparently really old.... you can't download any brushes or textures for it! So this was, to say the least, impossibly hard for me. I spent 8 hours on it! Many times I wanted to run to my mom and tell her to return the tablet! It was so frustrating, so please don't be too hard on me for it (I've never done it before!)
So I only used the paint brush, smudge thing, and dodge and burn tools. If anyone has any tips on digital art, tell me! It's a new medium for me and I'd like to get better at it :)

For your first digital painting this is great! Yeah PS 6.0 is old but it's got the basics that you can work with. I had PS 7.0 ever since I joined here (lonng time ago) and it wasn't until this past summer I upgraded to CS3.
Here's some tips. Avoid using the airbrush. I don't know if you used it or not but it comes off as a beginner. I used that when I first got a tablet. I thought it was the coolest cuz it blends really nice until I saw how other people's digital art looked. Stick to the hard edge brushes. 9 is pretty good. Use the [ and ] key to change the sizes.
I used to play with the opacity to help blend but I learned a brush modification just last year that wow'ed me. If I knew this back then, it would have made things a lot easier.
Press F5 in your photoshop, which should be the brush settings. Make sure to check SHAPE DYNAMICS, OTHER DYNAMICS and SMOOTHING. Under Shape Dynamic's options, make sure size jitter control is to "Pen Pressure". Under Other Dynamics' options, make sure all the controls are to "Pen Pressure".
This will help you control the thickness AND opacity of the marks you make.
These are just some of the things I've learned. Hope that helps a little! Good luck with your future digital paintings!
