Ah yes. The scratched in numbers. 117 is John’s identification number. He is the 117th Spartan in the Spartan II program, and is normally called Spartan 117 by his superiors. How they got there is a mystery. Perhaps they were put there by one of the four remaining Spartans (Kelly and Linda [Spartan II’s] or Tom and Lucy [Spartan III’s]). Or maybe Dr. Halsey (creator of the Spartan project [Cortana is the digital representation of her, made from her mind]). But how it got there is not the point. Who ever put them there thinks he’s dead. Fact of the matter is, John is alive and well. When we first saw him, he was brought out of cryo-sleep to combat the Covenant. In the third game, after the credits- we see him on the rear half of the Dawn, which was apparently torn apart as it entered subspace. The war is over and he enters cryo-stasis again. Full circle. He waits for pickup as Cortana watches over him. (I think Cortana actually sees John as a son because she was made from the mind of Dr. Halsey through a complex process and Dr. Halsey made him and every Spartan what they are.) Don’t know if that clears up your confusions, but there you go.

I don’t think so. Ghosts of Onyx is as far as they go so far. Thought I’m willing to bet they are going to make at least one more book. They cant leave the Spartans inside the core of Onyx without telling us what happens to them. It would be a travesty >_<.
