You can use recycled cardboard as long as it is not corrugated cardboard, it is too "bumpy".
Also, use clean cardboards, (not stained and oily).
Some cardboards have a background colour: brown, beige, grey..., and this is great.
BTW, you can also use recycled papers, why not? ;-)
Just remember that "recycled" items may not be "archival".
You will have to experiment, and try different surfaces, and determine which one is the best for your own style.
Anyway, if you are an absolute beginner, wouldn't it be easier for you to start with a simple and basic drawing paper for your very first time?
Then, you can always try other surfaces later...
Good luck with your pastel drawings.
I am looking forward to see them! :D

Thank you very much for your thoughtful comment! :D
I noticed that the grey behind the branches of the big tree was a problem when I posted the picture on line. :-)
It was not looking that bad on my original artwork. LOL
The original artwork is not very large: 27 x 20 cm (10.63 in x 7.87 in).
The space between the branches is very, very tiny (just a few millimetres at best).
So, due to size of the artwork and the limitations of the media (oil pastels),
I am afraid I won't be able to correct this problem, not this time.
We learn from our errors, anyway! :-)
