I wanted to make a Sonic fan character based on colors seen on a real hedgehog, and I wanted to make a mascot for Sonic yuri (as in, girl+girl love stories) - Lilya, or "Lily" for a nickname, was the result. :3
"Yuri" means "lily" in Japanese, hence the name. There's more to the story behind the expression "yuri" but I'm tired. You can find it on Wikipedia. :)
Mostly colored pencils, I think, and some markers...
Lily belongs to me.

If I didn't know what a real hedgehog looked like, I would have said she's albino XD How in the world do you comw up with these character designs?! Each one is always new and unique. I'm not all that interested in yuri, but I'm also not gonna sit here and bash people's opinions :) Will you be making a yaoi mascot? I mean, it would only be fair ;3

I found this photo online of a hedgehog with white fur, brown quills, blue eyes and a purple little nose! I thought it was adorable X3 That's how she started out!
It's usually one little thing, like a name, or a funky color combination, or some animal, that gets me started. This weekend I started thinking the word "measles" could be a nickname, and then boom I have a little dalmatian with a mutation so her spots are red XD Sometimes they don't go further than that, sometimes they just come to life and get their own stories :) It's only details like names and geography I have to work at. For the rest, one thing usually leads to another.
I like your attitude!
And actually, yes, there will be another mascot - though I don't use the word yaoi. The distinctions there are really confusing and the words have different origins ("yaoi" is an abbreviation while "yuri" is a word, for starters)...
Lily's got an older brother! I don't know his real name yet, but due to a hairdo he had during a "punk" period back in school, he got nicknamed Rosebud and later just Rose (this, because the same magazine editor that referred to gay women as "yurizoku", tribe of the lilies, referred to gay men as "barazoku" tribe of the roses - but the word "bara" is already taken and means a specific sort of gay works...*cough*) So for my own art and stories, I'd have either sibling "present" the respective works instead. That was the idea anyway, when I first thought of them. =P
