Krio-Relk and diver.

Did this a week and a half ago randomly, but.... HOORAY FOR RELK! XD Actually, this guy isn't a true Relk, it's a Krio-Relk (part of a race of Relk genetically engineered to better suit similar environments to their home world but on another planet).

What's going on:
So... this scenario like, doesn't happen. At least, not for a looong while, because people don't know the Krio-Relk exist. Very, very few people realize that there is more to the true Relk then they let on. People are suspicious, certainly - the Relk exist in their own system and aren't welcoming of visitors, and there have always been the dark ships that move through everything unhindered. It's whispered the Lockjaws are up to something. But here in this picture you've got a Krio-Relk out hunting for shelled things; it carries two round containers strapped to its harness that contain a special paste. They have no special appendages to remove the inhabitants of the shells right away, so they smear the paste on the opening and the creatures inside are paralyzed. Then you have the diver, who has found a particular shell of great value - one that is used specifically for drinking from (when out of water). They're very rare and considered a great find, and to own one is considered an honor. Even moreso though, if you find one and then give it to another - that is even more honorable, and to give up your find grants you immediate and lasting respect with the Krio-Relk. In addition it is customary for Krio-Relk to exchange gifts while oriented in opposite positions (one is upright and one is upside-down, with the giver being upside-down and dropping/placing the gift in the other's fin/hand).

About the actual piece: This image is unfinished, simply because I forgot to finish some things before I scanned it in. I realize there is little depth and atmospheric perspective - it's something that I'm working on. The human looks crappy from far away, but if you were to see the thing up close it looks pretty good. I had no references, and was working in less-than-ideal lighting conditions (which means that when I actually got it into a well-lit space it looked maybe half as good as it did where I'd been). I also got really angry at the background for being weak, and spontaniously decided it needed to be bright green. Overall, I'm only so-so happy with this as my first several ones came out much better. -_- Note: This piece has already been critted several times in class, so please respect the crit setting. It's done and I'm not going back to it.
So the artist's comment was typed out for dA, obviously... as we don't have a 'crit setting' on this site. ;)
I'm fond of the creature's underbelly, i looks very muscular and smooth. Like a ray or something - very cool. The diver can look pretty good or pretty bad, depending on how I'm looking at him, but overall I like him.
The whole upside down thing is really cool to me. Makes so much sense, and it feels almost familiar, like I've done it or something. I connect to it somehow, I guess.
A lot of the rocks in the background are really cool looking, and the green looks neat in most places, but I can't honestly say I think it looks any better than decent on the surface up there. Way too bright for myy tatse, but you did say it was random, so whatever.
Nice deep reds on the Krio-Relk, it contrasts nicely with the almost glowing blue lines on it's back.
Yeah, I know, I shift gears a lot when I'm commenting. XP Sorry about that.
