Rescue Me *Contest Entry*

Finally! My entry for darkwolf's contest.

Materials used: Sharpie markers, Derwent Shading Pencil, colored pencils (Prisma and others) and Colorless blender.

Time Taken: Quite a few hours

Title: "Rescue Me"

The sun peeked over the mountains, raining its warm rays down on the forest below. A frail wolf crept from the shadows of the forest and down to a large pond. He peered at his reflection in the water for a moment, then bowed his head and began to gulp it down. The cold water made his throat constrict, and within moments, the wolf’s eyes bulged as he struggled to catch his breath. It was yet another asthma attack, and of all times to get one. He squirmed and thrashed frantically, trying desperately to fill his lungs, but to no avail. Within moments, he lost consciousness and fell into the water.

He opened his eyes gently to the weak, red glow of the strange fire that danced before him. He attempted to move, but his body seemed paralyzed. He groaned softly. His heart nearly leapt into his throat when he felt a warm body stir beside him. Weakly, he managed to turn his head. To his surprise, a she wolf sat up from behind him, a gentle and innocent look on her oddly patterned face.

“Oh good! You’re awake! I was worried for a minute.” She gleamed cheerfully; her emerald eyes matching his own.

“Who are you? And where am I?” He asked weakly, unable to tear his eyes away from her strange, yet beautiful coat.

“Names’ Roach. I found you floating in the pond. You weren’t breathing. So, I brought you in here. What’s your name, pal?”

Feeling awkward for staring at her so long, he returned his gaze to the odd, transparent fire that burned before him. “Alex.” He said simply.

Roach grinned and turned her attention to the fire. “What are you, Alex?”

Alex jumped a little. “What kind of question is that? Is it not obvious? I’m a wolf.”

Roach laughed and shook her head. “On the outside, maybe. But on the inside…you’re different. You’re a werewolf.”

Alex blushed inside. How did she know? “And what are you then? I’ve never seen a wolf like you.” There was a bit of hope in his voice. “Are you like me? Are you…a werewolf, too?”

Roach closed her eyes and sighed. “Sort of. I used to be an angel. I was walking in the woods one day, and a werewolf who was being chased by hunters ran into me, clipping me with its fang. Ever since, I’ve been…different.”

Alex knew what it was like to be different. He glanced over his shoulder one final time. “Are you…my guardian angel?”

Roach didn’t answer. She merely smiled, her kind eyes never once looking at him an any judgmental manner. Alex once again became lost in the fire. He closed his eyes.

“Alex, you mustn’t fall asleep.” Roach warned, her voice suddenly sounding so distant. “If you fall asleep, you’ll die.”

Alex attempted to answer, but he suddenly felt so cold. His lungs felt as though they were about to burst.

“ALEX! DON’T FALL ASLEEP!” Roach’s distant voice screamed. “WAKE UP OR YOU’LL DIE!”

Alex exploded from under the water, gasping and choking violently. He pulled his body out of the water, coughing up puddles of murky liquid that he’d inhaled while drowning. Once he’d caught his breath, he looked around wildly. Where did Roach go? Had it all been a dream? He looked up at the sky. The sun was still just peeking over the horizon. He growled to himself and shook his head. It was only a dream…
